Old Testament: An eye for an eye. New Testament: Turn the other cheek Conclusion: Your choice. You will find ample support for any point of view.
hm i disagree. jesus says that in the old testament it says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. but do not do that! but turn the other cheek. seems pretty clear to me. up to that point, it was an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. but now, it is turn the other cheek.
No problem. Everybody does. Jesus actually says something in the Old Testament? That's news to me. So Jesus supposedly says something in the Old Testament and you say don't do that? Seems pretty unclear to me. As I said .... pick your poison.
I've wondered how many times thy cheek should rurn. Anyone have a revolving cheek account? Interesting to hear the opinion of a Ghost on this subject......
Didn't we go through all of this with Travon Martin and George Zimmerman. Zimmerman should have gone the other way. He sought confrontation. Zimmerman should have stayed in his car.
As for the cheek .... I quoted it, it's not an opinion. As for the opinion .... wether you kill someone in self defense is not something you can easily decide. Self defense implies a fight (at least to me). The result of that fight is not always predictable. But whoever does the killing will have to live with it.
Not all self defense involves striking a blow or doing injury to another. I say this as a result oat least thirty years crisis intervention, concert, and soup kitchen (Digger) experience from Haight to Alaska.
huh? jesus didn't say something that was in the old testament here, he quoted something from the old testament as a reference point to elucidate his position about turning the other cheek. matthew 5:39-48 Matthew 5: 17
crisis prevention is an interesting point of view. because i suppose that you don't necesarily have hate in your heart in doing so, nor are you taking vengeance(though you could). i'm sure that God smiles on this, more than primal-reaction type of self-defense. most people would admit they don't have enough faith to just let someone openly attack them. i think peaceful resolution is pretty cool.
If your skill at blocking is such that they can't hit you yet you can demonstrate an ability to reach past their blocking and touch their accupressure points. It encourages peaceful conversation or wears them out.
yea the bible doen't really draw any differentiation between crisis prevention and self defense. it doesn't say anything about crises prevention either. probably because that is an eastern art. even the most godly men i know, said that they would still defend themselve if someone attacked them. (and i've seen it happen before) for being so mild, gentle, and loving, they sure can lay down a beating! though really what they did was just subdue them, not retaliate.
If you're a good Christian, then why would you want to defend your life? Let yourself be killed so you can get to heaven and be one with God.
There are not any scriptures that directly mention self-defense or talk directly about it but a consideration of many scriptures talking about how God feels about life, death and killing can give us an idea of how we should view it. Basically, we have the right to defend ourselves but killing the person should not be the object of our defense. The death of the person should be an accidental result of our self-defense and even then God will hold us accountable for the death.
