You the man too Pavel! Thank you for saying this to me, sometimes I feel like my words may as well be blowing away with the wind. If your ever coming to the NE please let me know! I think though, that these days we are being tested to see how well we can hold onto ourselves admist so much negative adversity. I can tell from talking to you on the forums that you see a lot more then many people Pavel, and it's a blessing to be able to have the technology to talk to so many open minded and wide eyed people all over the world on the forums.
Yes. These forums and wonderful people like you in them helped me open my eyes to many things. I'll probably be up in N.Y. sometime in 2008, my step-sister and step-uncle both live in the city. It's pretty damn close to you.
Did you bother to read what I posted before attacking? The question I posed is the following: "What is the scientific explanation for how the universe began, for how matter – infinite matter – came into being from nothing?" Note the word "how" and the absence of the word "why." As to love, I posted the following: "How does science identify and quantify love? Science can’t." Again, note the word "how" and the absence of the word "why." And I went to UPenn, not Vassar.
Philly!!! Are you from here kwakwa? I used to live across the street from the emergency room on 38th and Powelton
I'm from New York, but I went to Penn undergrad. I have fond memories of getting wasted and tripping on shrooms in West Philly. I learned some school stuff as well.
Statments are not attacks. And I'm sure you understand that the pronoun does not define what sort of question will be asked. You're assuming that matter was created by the big bang, and not an extenstion of something that could have always been. You're asking for a how for this because it's a question that resolves a very basic philosophical where did I come from question. You're trying to find a scientific answer for a philosophical question. There isn't one. Nor is there an answer for why rainbows are beautiful, or how to quantify subjective emotions such as love. Again, you're looking in the wrong place big papa.
The question I posed is the same question you succinctly described as follows: The word "how" is not a pronoun, and I never asked "why" (which is not a pronoun either). Methinks you are a bit confused. And I consider "statements" like "put on your big boy pants and go to college" and "Why does love exist is something your parents should have explained to you, not your Vassar educated compatriots," as personal attacks or, more accurately, as insults by an asshole that is in too deep above his head.
You mean as opposed to your fabricated words I never used and statements I never made? I quoted you verbatim. Here is your subject post in its entirety -- my previous quotation omitted only your fabrications, gratuitous insults and your self-serving bullshit at the end: I posed only the question "how" as to both the universe and love; I never posed the question "why." So exactly what "point" did you make then? The point that you are a dishonest asshole? Ok, I'll grant you that point. You have proven yourself.
Contextomy is selecting part of a quote, and misrepresenting the context not a misquote. I'll repost what I've already said to keep from repeating myself. The interrogative doesn't affect what you are asking, just how it's phrased. I want you to try and listen to me one more time, Now if you still don't get it, I understand. You seem a bit cranky to be listening objectively. Take a nap, go jerk off, and come read again when you don't feel like going all incredible hulk, okay tiger?
I will restate the same question I posed but in the form of a simplified declarative statement so it may be easier for you to comprehend: Whatever explanation modern science has proffered to date for how (not why, but how) the universe began, that explanation is as far-fetched, if not more so, than belief in a metaphysical higher power, i.e., God. Understand now, Einstein? And in my opinion, your sig betrays your bigotry.
Well it isn't though. The big bang did happen. I gave a short explanation, since I am not a physicist, nor is it my duty to explain it to people who do not want to hear the answers. Not is science going to present a why to this question, which is still the point your getting at. I went to community college, and I'm going to film school as soon as I can get student loans... I don't have a cosigner. If not it'll be uni for me. I'm not in a hurry as I'm traveling next year. And I appologise if I gave the impression I cared for your opinion on my signature.
"Whatever explanation modern science has proffered to date for how (not why, but how) the universe began, that explanation is as far-fetched, if not more so, than belief in a metaphysical higher power, i.e., God." That is just your opinion. So what is the purpose of your thread? You're opinion is not worth anymore than anyone else's. I'd say a lot of people including myself believe that the presence of a higher power (no evidence whatsoever for this) is much more far fetched that what science can offer.... but I'm not so narrow-minded to exclude the option that there might be a higher power out there. You are very foolish if you will discount science entirely and blindly believe one thing.
Of course it's my opinion. I never claimed otherwise. I never said I "discount science." Those are your words, not mine. Do you believe human beings on earth are the only or the most intelligent form of life in the infinite universe? If you do not believe human beings on earth are the only or the most intelligent form of life in the infinite universe, then you necessarily believe there may be a higher power. If you do believe human beings on earth are the only or the most intelligent form of life in the infinite universe, then who is the narrow-minded one between us? And per the thread title, the purpose of this thread is for me to post quotations and my "random thoughts," which are "random" only insofar as they are not all about the same subject. If I am challenged or insulted owing to my random thoughts, I can and I will defend those thoughts and respond in kind.
I choose my words precisely, befitting what I do for a living. Specifically, I refer you to definition 5 of "modest": http://www.thefreedictionary.com/modest
