Okay. There are many philosophies and not everyone agrees that Christian philosophy is more valid than the others. Still, lots of people are influenced by it so it deserves its mention.
First thing I see on opening a thread about patriotism.... talk about organized religions... How fitting... Both require the participant to suspend reason and operate on blind faith...
No, no. The topic of patriotism led to the topic of pride, which is natural. No one is pounding an organized religion. Philosophy is the study of meaningful existence and its corresponding topics- like pride. Although you're right that Christian philosophy is of a religious nature. That's the way it is when we're exploring moral senses. Can't be helped. Well, at least I can't help doing it.
Oh, sorry. I thought you were complaining about the direction I'd taken the discussion. My bad. I'm not always correctly intuitive.
Oh yeah, I see it now. 'both require the participant to suspend reason and operate on blind faith' Great point! I gotta get to bed. I'm getting dopey. Been grumping all night.
i think the definition of american patriotism includes the idea of rejecting blind faith. the true patriot forefathers were in fact operating as a very small counterculture. it assumes that a patriot is a conscious participant in governing the land
Interesting. So even those who don't give a shit about flags or anthems are still patriots so long as they participate in governance. I bet Sean Hannity doesn't agree with that.
A Patriot, as in the ones who rebelled during the revolution, is a name given to a group of combatants. patriotism is means devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty. As for the first part... Would you like me to quote the examples of blind faith in support of 'american patriotism'?
i reject anything that is not my choice my being born american is an accident why should i have pride in that? my being born into a family of liars and abusers is an accident again, i had nothing to do with it my cats? i rescued them, that was my choice--and it was their choice to stay with me as well that's what i am proud of [where is my cat flag?]
I don't think pride is a "sin". I am concerned about what is present in it's absence. If you have done nothing to be "proud of", are you then worthless? Like I said I think pride is an insidious form of self loathing. Whatever you have done to make your self proud pales in comparison to what you are. If you have pride in something you can be sure that in some measure you have found disgust. Pride is not necessary, come to think of it, neither is nationalism.
Seriously, are you on crack or something? What we are, is made up of the choices we make through life and the things that we have done, the experiences that we experience, the life that we live. Have you not every accomplished anything in your life? That is the only conceivable way a person could state such a thing and think it has any validity at all. See that? I built that. I have great pride in the fact that I built that. Just how do you see that pride as reflecting some form of self loathing?
Seriously no. Seems kind of philosophical but ok. I think we are biological entities. Well to accomplish means to carry out or complete something successfully. So I would say I accomplish many things in any given day. I particularly like brushing my teeth. Yes, what is it? It looks like a chair but it has strange proportions. I kind of got the gist of cut and paste when I was in kindergarten. I can see being grateful for being able to "do" things in life. I make some art. In am grateful to be able to do this, but I am not "proud" to have the hand eye coordination to reproduce the images I see in my mind, that is a proclivity I was born with, I did nothing exceptional.
let others be proud of your acomplishments ..... you'll never move forward if you have pride in yourself (except your ego, that'll grow)
