terabyte used to mean what tebibyte means now until it was redefined by the IEEE a few years ago to make stuff easier on drive manufacturers (apparently)

I do imagine it's harder to say "terabyte hard drive" than

"24 gb short of a terabyte, because we rushed it to market, wanted to be the first manufacturer to be able to say terabyte HDD."

 

its my experience that they actually make them that way but they advertize them as even numbers

for example if i had a "500" gig hard drive it would probably really be 512 gigs.

 

I used to have that experience, but not lately.

you are actually gaining 12 gigs when its advertised at 500.
I thought the experience of knowing the true size of the HD when everyone else just thought it was 500 was lamentable.

but now they actually are only 500gigs? I guess your original statement of losing the 12 gigs is correct.

I'm an aspie, it's not thinking fast per se, it's just thinking in parallel.
