It seems kinda shallow folkey rock to me. If I wanted down-tempo, I listen to Isabelle Antena. Much more depth for down temp stuff. Besides, Common is a brilliant lyricist. Montbleau has nothing on lyrics comparred to Common.
Where have you heard him before? You live in Texas right? The guy hardly gets any airplay in Boston where he's from
Sasha is delving into a pretty different genre then Dj Shadow is. Dj shadow is lyricless hip-hop, and Sasha is largely a trance DJ. Sasha's good though.
I used to give away a flower a day Now I’ve got me a field of roses That stare back at me from the window and beg me for somewhere to go I used to leave the light on after sunset Now I just sit in the darkness Count the hours as they roll by and I sip my bourbon slow I guess it has to do with the message that you're looking for on a personally level. His lyrics speak very strongly to my life's experiences and I'm not a lyrics guy. I more often than not prefer the whale of a great guitar performance than the words from someone's lips. Ryan is an exception to that taste of mine Take me under and make me understand. Block my lungs off and make me appreciate the air. Show me the way to touch my toes. Make it a little bit easier, now, this pain it ever grows. Show me the way to do the things I’ve always wanted to do, To do. Open up my eyes, tell me all about these lies that I’ve been telling. Buying into fantasies and dreams my own demons were selling. Show me the way to spread my wings. Make me wonder how I never trusted those things. I know that I could fly the highest if I’m only given the time, The time.
fair enough I wasn't particularly impressed with the guy until I say him live He kind of fits into the David Grey, Martin Sexton singer songwriter category and to me he blows anything in that genre out of the water. Far slicker approach and a much better band. More often that not when he's playing live, its a more funk experience with a lot of amazing interpretations on covers Billy Preston and David Byrne would be blown away by what he can do with their songs
I'd give him a chance live I guess, it's just what my sis linked me to sounded kinda bland. I've heard some people remake songs that would embarrass the original artists. One of my favorite songs a few years ago was this remix of a fucking Avril Lavigne song.
DJ Shadow is good... but there's so many better hip hop artists out there now, in my opinion. endtroducing turned me on though.. a while ago back in high school. not to say it isnt still good though... the last thing i listened to was the soundtrack to Almost Famous cause I just watched the movie. heh heh. does that count?
I don't know if I'd say better. In the realms of beats I've yet to hear many people beat Shadow. But he lacks any experimentation lately it seems I agree. You like Talib Kweli Floyd? I really appreciate the better lyricists in the hip hop community too. Shadow is a bit of a ghost in modern MCing.
Yeah.. talib is good. I still think there's better out there now though. Best MC out right now IMO is Eyedea. No one can touch this kid. Plus his freestyle is just in-freaking-credible. Chech out "The Many Faces of Oliver Hart" or any Eyedea & Abilities. As far as original MC's go... you NEED to also check out Abstract Rude's "P.A.I.N.T". Ab is smooth and original. I could go on and on and on.. but yeah DJs... well DJ Abilities is really tight. I also like DJ Babu and Dangermouse alot. It's ok, im a music snob too (especially hip hop) hehe
