You could blame it on a TV show you watched, like, say, "Mayberry, U.S.A.", where you saw the boy eating the candy bar in the store, and bringing the wrapper up to the register to pay for it, and the kindly old man saying "Why aren't you a handsome young man. You just take that wrapper and throw it in the trash can. I'll forget about it this time." It's the classic "Andy Griffith defense".
Yeah, i don't think that's illegal here either, as long as you bring the wrapper to the front and pay for it.
