Why should the white man get to make the rules to control people who have been here 15,000 years longer then they have? It looks to me like the whites are the bullies here, putting tanks and high powered weapons along a border to control poor unarmed people who want nothing more than to feed their families. .
Shit, it would be interesting if most positions in government were awarded to non-whites, or at least poor or blue collar folks capable of thinking critically about politics (which many blue collar whites in the conservative side have unequivocally proven they can't...or won't). Maybe some shit would actually change. Or maybe the non-whites and working class folks would end up being bought and sold by the wealthy establishment, just like the vast majority of our lily white political leadership is now. I'm starting to think America will only get better if its citizens suffer worse conditions. Bring some third world flavor to a large chunk of America and maybe we'll see a leftward shift. Right now, I'd love to see just a few politicians (and their constituents) rise up and say, "We want free tap water, paid for by a 1% tax increase on the super-wealthy or else we're gonna have some class war up in this bitch." In fact, such a spectacle would be the one thing that would actually give me hope for this laughably wacky country we live in.
Indeed. America has been stuck on the same lame note for 30 years now. Regressive. The big dumb-down. Obama's magnificent oratory skills have translated into nothing of substance - just a little more style than the last four retards. That and a buck fifty will get a voter a cup of coffee. But the electorate has not been changed either. They remain deadlocked half and half with a 51-49 being considered decisive. Even after the stupidest and most corrupt administration I've ever seen (and I've observed them all since Eisenhower, who was a pretty decent one), the electorate went just 52-48 at best and is now back to 50-50. So, Quig, your point is well-taken. Despite the embarassment known as Bush Jr. and the hoopla of fraudulent Obama change, the electorate is still not ready to make a sea-change toward progressing civilization. It simply hasn't reached critical mass yet. More pain is apparently needed.
Whether this country experiences a left or a right-leaning shift, which we seem to do every four years as we find someone new to blame, it really doesn't amount to anything at all. We either vote for the asshole represented in red or the asshole represented in blue. Kindergarten democracy at its best, america is now voting for its favorite color. I agree that this country needs to experience more growing pains to usher in radical change, but i'm wary of purely reactionary change as well.
At least we get to know ourselves for the love of one another, not the misunderstanding of change. I vote for Mayor Juliani; woops, I'm in Canada: Elizabeth May (May for Pink.. of the 'Green Party').
Immigration of unskilled labour drives down wages for unskilled labour... Regardless of political bent, people don't like it when things hurt their pocket book.
Sorry, but you are wrong. It's the corporate exploitation of immigrant labor in violation of U.S. law that drives down wages, not immigrants, who would be just as happy to work for 7.50 an hour as they do for 4.00 an hour. Immigrants are more at the mercy of corporate jerks than citizens who have an avenue for filing complaints. Immigration laws are a matter of "good business," that's why they don't change. Corporations rely on a large pool of illegal workers who can't complain about wages or working conditions. There is nothing the federal government can do to stop people from coming across the border as long as jobs are available. On the other hand, if they were to arrest and imprison corporate officers for hiring illegal immigrants, jobs would dry up and they would not come. It would be a rather simple matter to solve this problem, except the ones hiring them also contribute to political campaigns and back the Tea Party in order to keep the status quo. It really is as simple as following the money. .
I don't understand why americans defend illegal immigration. Defend legal immigrants who go through the formalities all you want, but why defend illegals? The key word is illegal. You can't just walk into a man's house and demand to stay. At least knock on the door and ask niceley first.
Alright now make your argument using facts while also not using the world illegal because our immigration system is hopelessly broken, so I don't really give a shit if they're illegal. America has a moral responsibility to take in immigrants who are seeking a better life and our current system does not allow for that. If you don't have family in the United States already good luck getting in.
Where do you live, If you're not an American, you don't have a dog in this race. However, we're not defending "Illegals," we're defending "people." We're defending peoples whose cultures were decimated by the hoards of European invaders. The immigration issue is much more complex than "they took r jobs." Many industries, like the carpet industry in Dalton, Ga, would have died from worker shortage if not for immigrants from Mexico in the 80s and not enough Americans are willing to work in the hot sun to pick the crops we put on our tables. There are several chicken processing plants near me that have problems finding employees willing to work in a salmonella infested environment killing and cutting up chickens all day with razor sharp knives. Despite what you think, Americans will not do some of these jobs, and having said all of this, no green card, no job would solve the issue once and for all. My guess is that if we do this we will be issuing green cards as fast as we can print them to get most of the workers back. .
It would have been nice if the white Europeans would have done that in 1629. They just walked into the home of the natives and stayed, didn't knock, didn't ask nicely. .
Yeh. That was rude. The natives should have had an immigration policy when they had the people and power to enforce it. But they just let these few boatloads of 'white' people stay and next thing you know.
