Hey, I'm a college junior up in Atlanta looking for the same kind of dig. I'm not looking for anything permanent, but would love to have a retreat not far by.
If you want to talk about it more, PM me.

Okay, forget the island idea. That would be waaay too expensive. Also, living by the beach or in the mountains would be great, but too expensive as well. I guess going to a nice, rural area would be the best idea.. I like a variety of scenary though, I can't be living in a place with huge fields, and no trees or hills or anything.

As far as what I would live in..... if I was just going on a backpacking trip or whatever (which I also plan to do after college), I would just need some light equipment, a nice tent, and some durable clothing. Otherwise, I would plan on either living in a yurt, teepee, log cabin, or a cob home. I've looked into all of them on the internet, but wouldn't be able to go building one on my own just yet.

As far as cheap acreage, we could go to a country where the value of a US dollar is inflated (like Mexico, Guatemala, or another South American country) and buy lots of land there. I think that would be the best idea actually, as long as we find a country without a dictatorship or a crazy government.

I don't think this would be a permanent residence; rather just a temporary home when I want to chill from exploring the world. I think it would be a wild, crazy way to live; but it is definately do-able.

Montana is the perfect place for outside living, but mainly in the summertime. I have a little camp next to the river were I stay mostly all summer aside from hitchhiking to the nearest town. All the folkswho visit the river in the summer are a likable bunch and by fall I know them all by name. Property here isn't all that cheap, but it is definatly worth looking at. Hell being vacrant here is actually a great way of life as long as you got somewhere warm in the winter.

Wow, its great to meet someone else with the same ideas that i do and I really like your bus idea. When I said Rv in my post, I really was thinking in terms of whatever I found at the right deal whether it be a traditional RV or a school bus or whatever. Money is the hardest part of getting my plans off the ground but I am making strides. Im divorced, pay child support and due to the divorce, I have zero credit, but Im careful with the money and I have paid off every bill I have except of course the utilities and such. I think I will be able to get the vehicle this year, and then live in it full time. Like you, I want to buy a piece of land in several different states and just go from one to the other when ever the mood hit me. I know it would be a good life, and enjoyable an it would not be expensive to maintain once it got started.

anyhow, its good to find like minded souls and perhaps our paths will cross one of these days. I hope so. Thanks for checking out myspace and becoming a freind. Later Bro,

    Joe

I was talking with some of my other friends, who were thinking of doing the same thing. Except one of them had really though about it, and he was thinking on a much larger scale: he said that we should have some kind of forums, or website, where all people living like this can communicate, list their homesteads/villages, etc. I think it would be awesome to have an interconnected community like this.

That seems like a perfect cabin man.. and Alaska would be awesome, because it's the last untouched frontier of the US, and beautiful. I'd have to go to Mexico during the summer though; I hate cold weather!

its great meetin ppl who want the same thing i want to just go travelling on my own or in a very small community of ppli can absolutely trust. i wouldnt like to like in an RV or anything because all it does is bring modernisation with it in a hail of gas and fumes. i want to go trekking round britain...yes the small shitty island i live on but scotland is myhome country and i loveit for the highlands. i want to find a nice peaceful mountain valley with a cave or somewer to set up a small tent to live in and just spend the rest of my days there. ill do it someday all i need is time.

I'm seriously thinking about doing this.. but now I'm REALLY thinking abotu Argentina..just because we could actually put down like $50k and get 100+ acres of undeveloped, untouched, natural land. And if we met the locals, I bet we wouldn't feel nervous or threatened!

it is so nice to read the idealistic and utopian dreams of others.
even nicer to hear from those who have fulfilled their dreams.
i once shared many of these dreams.
the thought of escaping an oppressive society, disconnecting from the onslaught of global destruction, and settling down with a group of peaceful environmentally conscious individuals, was constantly on my mind.
for those of you who wish to pursue this dream, may i offer a few things i have learned.
first, no peaceful society can ever flourish while armed aggressors exist. they will simply hunt you down and kill you. that is the painful reality.
far better to work within society to raise the collective consciousness, while adapting your wants and needs to reflect your moral convictions.
we cannot, as peaceful beings, remove ourselves from the protection of law and government, and retain any hope of survival.
if we dislike the policies of our government, then we must use due process to bring enlightened policies into play.
this is how we make the world better, for ourselves, our friends, our descendants.
some have found their answer in mobility. the freedom of the open road is quite envigorating.
others have found their cabin in the woods, have found a way to commune with nature while maintaining a comfortable lifestyle.
no offense intended, but at least in the usa, you cannot simply go into the woods and live. but you can buy property. you can get cheap land with low taxes, pay cash for it and live cheap.
i did that. bought an old house on 5 acres. near a small town. easy drive to a major city. low taxes.
i made my living at flea markets for years. now i sell online. this allows me to spend my time at home.
i live a modest but comfortable life. i enjoy what i do, and feel i am contributing something positive.
