Yah I agree, Animals is among their best work and eventhough you may not have to dig through the out of print catalog to find it, it certainly is more challenging with its 3 main tracks all clocking in over 10 minutes. Meddle is Waters/Gilmour era...
I was thinking more in terms of bands that have come after pink Floyd. But yeah, Hendrix is an incomparable musician with the talent of a supernatural space dweller...dude is a fucking alien.
I totally feel you on this. Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd is very underrated. "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is a flawless masterpiece. I remember how I used to listen to that album every day my sophomore year. haha "A Saucerful of Secrets" and "Meddle" are my other favourite albums of theirs. "Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here", "The Wall", etc. I'll only listen if I'm in the right mood. Especially if there's ganja. While they are masterpieces, they are definitely overrated. I hate how the marketing for Pink Floyd is treated these days. Ignoring their earlier work is like listening to The Beatles' "White Album" and "Abbey Road", but ignoring "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper".
There's definitely artists out there right now that are just as talented. Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear are both very amazing psychedelic bands that I dig a lot. But real music is timeless, and I think it's sad for someone to only listen to music that's considered "current". Pink Floyd are their own irreplaceable entity. May their music live on.
I never talked about liking certain eras with liking pf but was a whole discography. She obviously just wants to b cool and not left out thats why I dont take her serious. She the fan am talkin about... Anyways shes the same person who said music theory is unnecesary. Can u sound more dumb?
Yes. You quite often sound more dumb than me Pink Floyd with Barrett and without is basically two different bands. Because bands, you know, evolve. Music is music and you either enjoy it or you don't. To claim you have to like a band's entire discography to be a fan is pretentious. Just to clarify I didn't say music theory is unnecessary. I said I have a couple of friends who are mind blowing talented and don't know shit about theory so it isn't necessary for everyone.
I fit none of those two "hipster" posers you mentioned. Anyone who reads my post in the music forums in general knows when I talk about music I know my shit. Your some privileged 50yr old guy that was a teen in the seventy exposed to boats loads of great commercial bands that wherent products of coorperat record companyings looking to make a good fat buck but had real good raw talented bands. Thats why I have a hard time taking these clowns serious when they claim to be pf fans. Melia is a perfect example. I have a real passion about music since am a guitar player so I know how hard and creative it is to be a good original musician. Most people just want to be hip and like bands like pf to sound cool but dont get the means behind songs. You can say why cant someone just take pf as is but I doubt gilmour and water want that. I think those two dude are real deep lyricist and some ppl cant grasp that. Believe me, ppl who only heard the four albums are the type of ppl who let mtv feed there music taste.
Aw puddin, youre a guitar pwayer? Well that settles it, you know everything about music. Honestly, people like you are annoying. there are bands out there where i love every album, every rarity, every live performance, blah blah. Do I give a shit if someone else only likes a particular time period or a particular sound on a few albums? No, I'm just happy people can dig 'em at all.
Yah I get what you're saying but it sounds to me like she gave Barett era a try and just didn't like it, and I view Animals about the same accessibility as Meddle. I mean I don't hear songs from Animals on the radio like I do DSOTM, The Wall or even WYWH for that matter. As a guitar player myself, I think Pigs (Three Different Ones) has one of Gilmour's best solos and the lyrical content for that album is fairly unique and deep, more focused than Meddle imo. I can't defend her on that one.
München 1994. It was just amazing to hear tens of thousands of people singing "shine on you..." the ground was shaking and clouds of smoke lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDnNFt_4ibo"]Pink Floyd - On The Turning Away - Munich, 04.08.1994. - YouTube
They are far from shit but I can't help but see them as overrated as well. Not sure which period is overrated the most. Perhaps the syd era by the serious pf groupies and the waters period by anybody else who've had the pleasure of hearing Pink Floyd's music?
