Since this is a free speech kind of place where we can say F this and F that, and many have their Facebook including family and some their work places I think it would be a bad idea to mix the two, just my thinking. And I do like the lay out on this site already, sometimes change takes stuff you have away. In fact in many cases it does even if there a few new things. So far the only change I could see needed is to make the chat open to all, some computer types can't use it.
We're hoping to get a new (or newer) server to host the site. This one is very, very old by any standard (probably 10 yrs old). Don't worry about the Facebook links. That shouldn't be a problem for anyone. You'd have to sign in to FB first to do anything. So it's always the user's option. But be aware, if you do sign-in to FB from here, obviously FB will know you've been here... Just like if you went from HF to FB in your browser, they know where you came from. If you don't have a FB account, I doubt you have anything to worry about. Any experienced FB user should know how to post things up and protect their info. The site will get a major redesign as we will lose all the custom programming that I've added to this place. Some of it will come back, but some will likely be lost. And yes, we are hoping this will bring in more traffic as ppl, esp ppl just browsing (not members) tell others about HF. It's that, or let HF die a slow painful death...
I hear ya Skip...... We dont want you to take it down.......... But look @ the big picture... THIS SITE WORKS WELL ON VBB,alot of members here, why change it?? Now some VBB sites likes www.frappydoo.com arent doing well @ all... Sites been dead for months (I am the only one there) -- Admin says he is gonna take it down..... I am trying to keep it active there so he doesnt He said to me last week "Websites like this have run thier course" and its sad... WE DONT WANNA LOSE HF SKIP,WE LOVE IT HERE!!! -- The colours, the atmosphere,etc....... I dont think any of us would be happier on Invision (Even though its much better then VB4) Take a step back my friend.. HF IS FLOURISHING RIGHT NOW!!!!! -- Why change it to something not as nice?? Peace and love to you Skip
If someone here posts something so brilliant or witty that I actually want to share it somewhere else.....I'm not going to include their name. I'll cut and paste that shit and take credit for it myself! j/k But seriously, I wonder if people friends lists, photos and other profile related things will carry over intact.
Well to be quite frank I DONT WANT ANYTHING I POST ASSOCIATED WITH FACEBOOK!!!!!! I do whatever I can to avoid that spying site.....
I'm not sure I share your prognosis. I've seen a lot of dying sites ... and this one doesn't look or feel dying to me. But if you think it's needful, well, I guess it's your call ...
dear skip .....I trust you and your ability to make decisions about the site ........as an old fuck I too hate facebook but am willing to concede that the connecting of various media to each other is the way the internet and technology is heading... ....I am behind you 100% trust me with your money or your life but not your wife .............................................................rolling
Hi Moonglow, I like what you said. I'm brand new to HF and I'm struggling to learn how to post and even how to find threads. It's complicated enough.
really? 5 or 6 years ago, i used to be able to post on here all day and never catch up with all the new threads that had showed up since i went to bed the night before. now i generally stop by here every other day, and get through every new post in an hour. i'm not convinced that this upgrade will help, but you can't blame the guy for trying to stop the obvious decline on his site. it may be a thousand times better; we won't know until we see it in action. you don't want to live your life terrified to try new things. you'll miss out on the best of life that way.
there is a feedback loop between the number of users and the number of posts. site traffic is down compared to a few years ago. HF could indeed be in trouble if the status quo is maintained. like undies said, the tech changes might not help much. making the site more smartphone friendly might help a little. keeping a long list of active threads available could help too. tech is only partly relevant to traffic. site content and moderation policy are more relevant issues, but also much thornier and more complex.
what exactly is your problem with the moderation policy? please...expand on that for us simple folk that still support[with cash] that same policy
What is the basis for your objection to my post and the negative rep with the comment "more relevant issues?...fuck off."?
Yeah, I think I joined like 4 years ago and I remember staying home sick from work a couple of days and hipforums kept me busy all day. Now I usually run out of interesting threads to check out 20 minutes into my lunch break. I think smartphones have a lot to do with the loss of traffic. People don't sit at home and write detailed posts from their computers as much anymore. They're more likely to make short, quick posts from their phones
