Knives are scary as hell for most people. The idea of getting slashed and cut makes them panic.

Are you saying metal detectors in airports don't do a thing because there aren't metal detectors everywhere?

The point in having a metal detector in a specific place is to protect that one specific place. A metal detector in a school is not meant to protect the mall, movies, or anywhere else.

Most school shooters don't even get 20 shots in, and that's with a gun! Yet this guy did it with a knife!?

This is more serious than we thought...

There's a rampant ninja on the loose.

    :D I'm sorry... It's to soon, I know, but damn... 20...

People still get past em, the Detroit airport bomber...?

You could easily make a peice of wood just as sharp as any metal, are you going to strip search everybody now too because they could carry a weapon not made of metallic material.

    Its not realistic

I didn't say they were fool proof...

Would you rather there not be metal detectors in airports? Exactly.

They help, they're not perfect though of course, nothing is.

I never mentioned armed guards. I said someone should be able to check them in. This could be an security guard, parents, vets, an employee hired in the morning to try to prevent weapons from entering. Mistakes have already been made, lives have been lost, kids are being seriously injured. Not to mention the psychological damage being done to the children who are witnesses to these incidents, including the staff who have to deal with the aftermath of the violence. I'm concerned with more preventative measures being taken given the rise to these incidents. I don't have the absolute formula to give each school district that solves it. However I do feel that improved security measures need to be taken to ensure that your child is safe at school. In advance, not after someone else has been hurt or killed. How much does it take to finally react?

Still not realistic to put every person through one.

    I don't know.
I can't remember anything similar in this country, atleast not in my lifetime.

Someone posted a wikipedia article, it says " There are notable school shootings in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America, Asia, the Oceanic region, and Africa, with the United States bringing the highest number of school-related shootings."

This isn't the old Europe vs. USA argument, I am genuinely interested.

I would say at first instance there would be a bigger chance it would have happened in the Netherlands as well I guess if we had the same gun laws. But on the other hand, people have (or can easily get) knifes of any kind here too.

I wish we would focus on the answer to this question instead of involving ourselves in inane and pointless gun control debates everytime something like this happens.

Schools in America can be very alienating. I don't know enough about other schools in other countries to compare, but I really think an entire overhaul of the educational system is needed. Class sizes should be smaller to encourage a better sense of community, teachers should be paid more to discourage apathy among t he staff, a wide variety of extracurricular activities should be offered to encourage kids to get involves instead of slinking home after school to play video games. I really feel like the heavily institutionalized feel of public school is one reason why this keeps happening.

I don't blame the gun laws at all.
So many people here have guns, even illegal.

This is a problem here as well... :( In fact it is one of the reasons I concluded in the end: screw this shit, I'm not becoming a history teacher.

    I blame them partially.

So insightful and true. I have never really thought about it that way. Experience in schools can be critical to development.

For the love of god, home school your children!

They will likely get a better education and will have a very strong bond with you that will last a life time and shape the people they become, defining their own relationships later on. IMO the financial strain is worth it. What is money vs loving our children and having them become great adults.

Canada.. I may be in the dark, but I don't ever recal school shootings being a problem here. It may have happened. But I doubt it's a problem.

Somebody mentioned class sizes. Generally how large are classes in the states?

Here in Canada, they're usually around 30 kids per class. Where I went at least...

My school had its fair share of lockdowns, but nothing serious like stabbings or shootings. There were a few incidences with pepper spray and batons, and one year we had a serious lockdown because somebody called in saying a student was planning on committing suicide in the school. But that was the most that ever happened.

But they also brought in police dogs to sniff out lockers every few weeks and nobody was aloud in the halls during certain times.
