i'm a girl, and I don't really like girly music. I like some indie bands that are probably considered pretty vagina-esque, like Death Cab for Cutie...but as far as actual female musicians, I don't like very many unless they have something unique to offer.
I ususally don't listen to this music, but this one reminds me of college. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8SFVh5ONQA"]YouTube - Destiny's Child - Say my name
-After thorough investigatiin it appears the Things that make a song too feminine are: 1) The cheer E.g. = 'Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, Hey Mickey!" E.g. = 'The shit is bananas b - ana-na anas" 2) The made up word/phrase interjection E.g.= "I wanna, I wanna ziggy zig aaah... If you want to be my lover" E.g.= "Real lady marmalade... Gitchi gitchi ya dada, mocha chocalates' eee (*examples may not be spelled phonetically correct) 3) Physical Vanity (often accompanied with instructions and/or proclamations) E.g.= "My humps, my humps, my humps, my lovely lady lumps." e.g.= "I dont think you're ready for this jelly, My body is too bootylicious for ya babe." -I do enjoy some songs specifically aimed towards women/girls No Doubt-Just a girl Garbage-Stupid Girl Fiona Apple-Criminal Stevie Nicks-Edge of Seventeen Tlc-Waterfalls Tons more that may be directed towards guys or general topics but overtly from a woman's perspective. -I definitely do not sing any songs from the too feminine category, am not ashamed to sing a song sung by a woman to myself but they are usually not songs from the other category either.
I think these may be geared more toward women https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw7gNf_9njs"]YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnG9k_e5xog"]YouTube - Meredith Brooks - Bitch at lilith fair.flv
Could you imagine if those songs had been written by men?... 3) Physical Vanity (often accompanied with either instructions and/or proclamations) E.g.= "My lump, my lump, my lump, my lovely man lump." e.g.= "I dont think you're ready for this sausage, My body is probably adequate for ya babe." They sound like David Wilcox songs...
i guess the point of my obscure post might be this: it's not about gender or we'd be asking "what if men had sung all those hall and oates songs?"
There are good songs by female artists out there which I enjoy listening to. My favorite which instantly come to mind as I make this short post are Janis Joplin (even though her songs really aren't quite that feminine) and Norah Jones.
I love female singers. And while I have a lot that are more gender neutral (like most female-sung jazz); I have way more feminine ones. From things like Anna Nalick and Letters to Cleo girl-pop, to Le Tigre and Gravy Train!! riotgrrl feminist stuff. Feist is one of my favorite bands right now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-iAS18rv68"]YouTube - Feist - I Feel It All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-zUgiKPzt8"]YouTube - Feist - Inside and Out I think what makes a song feminine is mostly too much cuteness and cheesiness.
