Speedos are uncomfortable, so prefer shorts. Most women don't like men in speedos. Even better go to a beach where you can swim and sunbathe naked. Once you've done that you won't want to wear any swimming costume at all.

I always wondered why speedo wearers even bother....why not just walk around in your underwear if you want to....its like the same thing ..except for front door opening that nobody uses anyways

No no no, youre wrong. Girls can see all top of our body. Guys cant see top and cant see bottom also. And most girls wears one-piece, which hides all their body.

Trunks are just more comfortable than speedo's. Even if I was presentable in a speedo, I was about 10 years ago, they are not for me. I prefer au natural when at the beach. And as far as swimming in trunks, who goes to the beach and swims laps anyways.

I realize this is an old thread but I agree with the original question of why. I also disagree with John about comfort, but to each his own. I cannot stand Board shorts, get them wet and it's like swimming in a wet pillow case. Try keeping your junk from hanging and being uncomfortable in wet board shorts, it feels disgusting.
Speedos and tight suits keep everything in it's place, if I'm gonna hang I'm going nude.
If I'm doing water sports like skiing I'll wear board shorts with a pair of speedos under them to keep everything in place. But for beach-pool wear I'd perfer something a lot smaller and tighter.

I prefer a Speedo to swim laps but rarely wear them to the beach due to the stigma they seem to have, so I've found some colorful sq leg tight fitting suits. May look gay to some but I really don't care. I'm not going to be uncomfortable just to "look" like someone thinks I should.

I agree it's a double standard, women can wear next to nothing, be it they are fit or 200 lbs over weight and look like they were squeezed into a to tight a sausage casing.

Overweight men are expected to cover up everything so they don't "gross" people out.
Fit Men are expected to wear shorts that hang to their ankles while wearing them so low they're exposing pubic hair and butt crack. WTF is up with that look anwyay? Don't like it, think it's a "in poor taste look", but I'd be calling the kettle black if I got bothered by it.

Personally I think you should just use a few common sense rules.
    What looks good on you.
    What is comfortable.
    Where are you wearing it.

Beyond that I do not think anyone should think badly about what someone elses choice of swim suit is.
We all people watch on the beach, unless you are young, hot and fit or conservatively dress, you will generally be thought badly of no matter what you wear. Sad but just the way it is.
