you have to remember that recruiters are (most of the time) descent people who are in to serve their country. I was on recruiting assist duty from jan-feb, and i did go to schools to talk to possible candidates, but that doesn't mean i bullshitted them. I gave my honest opinion about the marine corps and the benefits it could have for a young person, 100% free college and the montgomery g.i. bill being major selling points.

Do i think recruiting offices should receive names, numbers, and addresses of every high school student?

    No.

but i think its actually beneficial to allow the armed services to promote themselves at school.

It takes a special breed to thrive in the military, and alot of kids today cant handle that kind of stress.

    regarding -cody-,
joining is a difficult decision, and honestly demands alot of soul-searching, but dont worry youll have awhile to sort things out before the "moment of truth"
don't compromise the branch you want to join for a shipping bonus, alot of bonuses come out of the money that should be spent training your ass.
anyway, don't be afraid to really take time and asses whats important in your life.
As for me, i missed my family and enjoyed doing the occasional drug.
    its not for everyone.

me too haha thats one of the reasons i don't think i'm going.

and most fuckers in uniform piss me off anyway.
i work in sales/customer service and tonight 2 young cocky ass pigs came in and it was amazing the vibe they gave the whole place. i didn't acknowledge them or help them for that matter. in fact, i wrote a sign that said "Workin Hard" and i was tryin to get a picture of me holding the sign infront of them with my buddy takin the pic, but it didn't work out.
these were some rude ass cops by the way. cocky as shit

    never generalize.

It places you in a position that is worse than those that you wish to describe.

The pay of a private with one year of service is $15,480 a year, which is about the same as if you were an usher in a movie theather.
Link to article on pay -http://www.military.com/AboutUs/0,14363,au_pr_032903,00.html

Additional pay for being in a combat zone is an extra $250 a month.

yes we all know the pay is not amazing. it's the experience and benefits and things that you dont need to spend money on that make up for the pay. if a person is determined, they'll come out with a bachelors, AND job experience.
and hopefully, money saved since most your expenses are covered. you just gotta utilize the things made available to you..

Why the hell are you guys trying to talk him into doing something he wants to do??

Honestly? Come on. Yeah, you guys aren't looking the real point. Your pay is low cause everything else is fucking free. Child care, medical, a lot of shit, this is stupid, everything is way cheaper on post, for everything i got at the commissary I paid 300 dollars less for the same groceries I got at wal-mart. 400 dollars I spent there, and 130 I spent at the comissary. Okay, so that's less than 300 but whatever.

    Cigarettes are cheaper here, jeez.

So the kid wants to get his life together and make something of himself, you say you guys are supportive hippies but all I hear is bitch, bitch, close minded, bitch some more. Stop talking and just listen for a damn change. Shit. That's annoying.

^uhh, you do realize i'm trying to point out the good things about the military right? i'm most likely going in september myself...

i'm not trying to talk him out of going or trying to change his mind in any way. there's tons of realllllllllly good things about the military. butterfly, if your last post was directed at me also, then maybe you read MY last post wrong. i SAID that if someone is worried about the pay, (which is NOT bad to begin with) then make use of all the free shit!

Even with the factoring in of all the benefits and free stuff, the pay is still far lower, when compared to civilian jobs with a comparable amount of hazards, injuries, deaths, mental trauma, etc., especially with ongoing active war zones.

I had a pretty good time in the military. During the first gulf war I was in the Navy. I got to travel a LOT! I went all over the Caribbean and Europe. I was in the Army reserves for two years and I wouldn’t suggest the Army for anyone. They were just too unorganized and didn’t really care about you as an individual. Then I was in the Marine Corps for seven and a half years and that by far was the most fun I’ve ever had. I got to travel to way more places than when I was in the Navy and most of the time I traveled alone, which can be pretty cool since there aren’t a few hundred loudmouths putting the locals on edge. However, I had reached a point where I wasn’t going to get promoted again. They were going to let me re-enlist one more time, but I felt that I had done enough in the military and needed to start something else before I got too old, so I decided to come back home. Now I’m going to explore more of the states.

hmmm, my boyfriend serves in the RAF in the UK and he has done recruiting and i have worked in recruitment along side some of the nicest and best people i have ever met and ever will meet. They are genuine and brillaint people and i dont know about the US but in the UK there is no bullshit tactics, they spell it out to the recruits exactly as it is, i know cause ive been and watched every stage of there recruitment. but yea, they give the good side of the job (and there is lots of good sides) ..just like any other employer....McDonalds dont sell there jobs to people by saying "join us, shit pay, no job satisfaction, lots of grease, and a crappy uniform" do they? they give you the perks of it, they sell it, just like every other fucking job anyone will ever get, so why should the forces be any different. everyone KNOWS (unless there idiots) the bad side of being in the services, they know they will go to war zones (thats kinda the point) so why not show the benefits to people!
I havent read this whole thread but the first few pages shocked me anyway. i cant believe how some narrow minded wankers are on here calling the military all sorts.....i dont think you'd be bitching like babies about them if the war on terror was on your doorstep and the only thing that was protecting you from some suicide bomber or roadside bomb where the services. for fucks sake they are ordinary people who have the balls to do something incredibly worth while. My boyfriend is currently in Iraq helping iraqi solidiers to build there country back up and restore a sense of control and he is teaching them to do the job he does so they can look after the country on there own and keep it secure, i couldn't be more proud of him for doing a job that requires bravery and real loyalty....all you bitches who think these men and women are all murders who like shootin guns need a reality check. I couldnt be more proud of my boyfriend and i miss him every day and pray for his safety but think he is the most incredible person with a million times more spirit than some of you bitches called the military names as you sit at your computer, nice and comfy in your room!

sorry about the rant, but this hits close to the mark with me.
