Why would you want to quiet your thoughts? Let the process occur. Find for yourself what's going on in yourself.
If the object of your meditation is for self analysis then there is obviously no concern over the thoughts that appear. If however you are wanting to learn about the subtle energies observing from a point of stillness is the most effective medium – hence thoughts are a distraction. ==================================================== “The ultimate truth cannot be challenged” www.acceleratedstates.com
I disagree. Your thought are part of yourself. They come and go, but the WAY you think is part of yourself. Wandering thought is like meditation's natural ressource. If you shut your thought you're missing the show.
If you are trying to observe the subtle energies the thoughts are irrelevant and a hinderance. I have some practical experience in this area several long meditates one of them was 10 days doing about 15 hours a day.
15 hours a day!!! Woo...! Isn't there a critical point where you need to go and live what you've learned in meditation? I need help understanding what you mean by subtles energies. What kind of energy are they? Psychological? Physical? Like the blood flow? Perceptions?
There are many forms of meditation and some do not have self improvement as a primary objective. I believe your focus on learning about yourself from meditation is good, I know people who have had profound realizations but neglected there own personalities to their detriment. With regard to the subtle energies this was quite a generalization as it covers many areas chakras, astral and beyond the astral. My focus is to move to more expansive states of consciousness, however when thoughts appear I observe them - if the same thought keeps appearing it might be something that I have suppressed so I either take action on it or accept it after that it doesn't usually reappear.
One of the easiest ways to reach a point where your mind thinks of nothing, is to allow your mind to think of everything it possibly can....the brain cannot conceive of that many thoughts at once, and usually goes blank - you cannot empty a mind until it is full to think of no-thing, implies the thought of every-thing
Good point it is a great technique! You can also use that technique for ignoring sounds and even pain - this formal technique is called Anter Mouna or inner silence. The thoughts will get less as you become more still and there is less interaction - you will hit a limit the mind can never be stilled. Light and Sound initiates whose awareness has been moved beyond the mind still have issues with the mind as the mind is contained in their expanded state - my apologies if I haven't explained this clearly. =================================================================================== "Power is the ability to still everything" www.acceleratedstates.com
Read back through the thread there have been some great postings from psychedelic goddess etc. There are many techniques that will slow things down and increase the time between thoughts - but as previously stated that is the nature of the mind. For the most productive meditate you need to be comfortable still and relaxed - ask around for deep relaxation techniques and find out what works best for you. Good luck! =============================================================================================== "The ultimate truth cannot be challenged" www.acceleratedstates.com
I find listening to recordings of certain sounds really focuses me during meditation. Not music as such - certainly nothing with words - I have some whale songs and some of rainforest sounds and some high-tech stuff specifically designed to help me meditate. When the music is on, I can focus and attain my state of calm without being distracted by 'mind noise'.
Find a spot where you will not be interrupted. A closed bedroom or the back corner of the yard can be good, wherever you feel comfortable. Make sure you will have some time with no distractions like phones, television or children.
