You're right there, I find the smell extremely strong as well, although I don't notice the smell after washing my dreads. The reason I use tea tree oil is because it's antifungal, helps against dandruff and deters lice. I'd much rather put up with the smell for a bit when I'm washing my dreads than have to deal with lice! The thought of getting lice makes me shudder
Know what ya mean...and having school age children who are always having sleep overs...I have become the head checking Gestapo
Well I'm feeling more certain there's still some wax in these dreads. Since my extra-hot shower the other night I've been noticing a weird smell on my fingers after fiddling with some of my dreads, and this morning I just remembered what it is. It's the same small I used to get when waxing - I think it was mostly from the Knotty Boy, wax which I always thought was nicer but harder to wash out (DHHQ's wax does come out relatively easily...considering it's wax). It's more of a chemical than biological smell (if you get what I mean?) with an almost metallic tang that really hits the back of the throat, I can almost taste it. Hmm. I'm not sooo bothered about it. I'm vaguely curious to cut a dread open and snoop about in there, and would if they were longer. Guess it goes to show that even when you're certain all the wax has gone, it quite possibly hasn't. Also, Ok, that statement is kinda dumb. You're basically saying this discussion is really stupid for being a discussion I get your meaning though, I think. I know it seems futile discussing something which for most of us has a foregone conclusion. I started this thread simply to approach the wax issue more expansively. We criticise the dread product companies for implying that we must use wax, or else, and all arguments against its use are extremist and without sound basis. Yet, perhaps for many dready newcomers visiting this forum, we are confirming that very thing. For most of us it is a simple black and white matter, leaving nothing to discuss. However, if we don't acknowledge and address the grey areas, examine and weigh up the pros and cons with a little more clarity, many people might continue to make waxy errors. It's easier to take advice if you can see the logic and reasoning behind it. I doubt many people fully appreciate the nature of dreadlocks, hair knot formation, residue behaviour etc until some time into the locking process. Notions like trying to appreciate how even the tiniest quantities of wax, applied with no matter how much care, could still build up into a problem over time...versus the common horror of looking dumb and being perhaps of an age where not looking dumb now feels more important than a problem which may develop, eventually, at a point in time too far off to feel like a real concern, are what we could give greater regard to. Maybe we could also throw up some good suggestions for getting through the worst times without turning to wax? Telling someone not to do something works better if you can offer them an alternative.
Yeah I mistakenly used K boy's wax for about the first month or two. It was one of the first websites i came across when doing my research about dreadies, so naturally, i thought everything they said was straight out of the dread lock bible. I used to have a smell, not a bad smell, just a smell to my dreads all the time esp. after shampooing. I definitely think it was the wax. Lately i haven't noticed it as much and am into my 8th month.
I'm in month 8 too. I quit wax around month 3-4. How long have you not been using wax? Or do you still use some?
I haven't been using wax for about 6 months, only used it for the first 2, till i worked out they felt better without it and to just be patient with them. P.S. I stumbled across your dread blog on my search for a dread community before i found this one, and was really surprised to recongnise your face. Nice blog by the way. You got Web design skills or was it a pre made template? Very nice
Oh, thanks! I'm the one with the skills to make stuff pretty, and my husband's the one who makes things work (he makes things pretty too but the site design was mine) Good team
Ahhhhh see Amy thats where I really think the wax companies are getting a bad a rap....go I'm gonna nail my ass to the cross again. They don't say you HAVE to use wax. They give you instruction to dread "their way". I never read on either of the sites that their way was the only way. They certainly dont make you buy their product..or use it...or over use it. My god it is a company selling products. That's what business do. Do we bash Ford for making cars and then advertising them...its just silly. Are they selling lies? No..they are selling their products. Everyone had a choice how they started their dreads....Im sure if anyone had the sense to get on line and find K-boy and DHHQ then they could of also found all the anti-wax info as well. I think this is a huge example of mob mentality.... I think DHHQ did respond to the anti wax issues by making the vids. I dont agree with the trying to sell more product. But they did make some very valid points. Like hey dont blame us when you use a whole damn pot of wax on one dread! Yeah I tried K-boy...and hated it. I was "water proof" left my shower nasty and my house smelled like a funeral home. Do I still have wax from DHHQ..I guess it could be possible. I dont feel it...dont smell it. I will let you know when mine get a little longer and I have the balls to cut one of them off. I tried SE's suggestion of boiling water...and nothing....so I really dont think so. Sorry so long!
Lol stop apologising for having an opinion I think what I meant was that to the total n00b, KB and DHHQ seem trustworthy and persuasive, so even though they may not actually use the phrase "you must use wax", it's an idea one can easily leave their sites with, such that it may not even occur to a person that wax would be bad or need any further research. I didn't encounter any anti-wax stuff in my net browsing until a fair way into my dready journey. It must be for similar reasons that people stumble into this place already with a head of "candles".
Why did "Night of the Living Dread" just pop in my head "Wax...must have Wax" Anyway...I found this forum looking at tats...go figure. Im glad I did though....I think this is a debate that will never end. I am sorry that people have had such negative dealings in this....and kudos to you Amy for redirecting your blog so that others can find ALL the info they need to make an INFORMED decision.
Didn't mean to imply you were one of the candle-heads! I remember you said you gradually ceased to feel a need for wax.
damn just made a long post and it logged me out while typing so here goes attempt 2 the way they do business is the issue here 1st ..if your on myspace u get a ton of freind requests from fdake ppl leading u to 2 dating sights these faske ppl are always sexy so u add em u get sent to adultfreindfinder or fling.com or a cam sight these are called affiliates lures to the sites \]knottyboy and dreadheadhq use this low form of advertisinbfg tp flood the web with misinformation in search engines u wont find truth if a search on locks brings up 100000 pages on locks the 1st 20 pages all lies and the truth burried now ontop of pushing all thye truth outta sight with thousands of pages of lies linking to theyre site they demonize all other opinions if u dont like wax your either jealouse of candles your stupid for overuse or your ugly and want to be ugly as u can then they imply theyre stuffs needed evebn for neglect they sauy use wax and bands and lock peppa and accelerator they scare u saying without theyre crap u will look disgusting for 2 years or more oh yea if u dont wax your dreads will break off too its like a scumbag snake oil salesman here drink goat piss and youll have great health and sex forever ..oh and now we got anotherr produck to get rid of thye goat piss taste
Wow. That's quite the dready-conspiracy. It doesn't seem like they could make a profit if they waste that much time and money hiding all of the anti-wax, anti-naturaldreads information.
SE no disrespect but I think you are reading what you want to read. I have never read anything at all like that. You interprete the way you want. For Christ sakes they are a business. Of course they want to sell their products. The natural way is not for everybody SE...and its okay. What they do say is IF you want to do it OUR way here is HOW.
Yeah, like Callie said, nothing personal SE, but sometimes it does sound like you're just kinda reading/interpreting things in a manner that you'd like to. I'm not saying that they don't say this, but possibly you could put up like a link or something as proof.
