Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" wasn't particularly revolutionary. that damn put a ring on it song. it played in literally every store and resteraunt two years ago. and was on the radio every four songs
"Smells like Teen Spirit" was revolutionary, it killed hair metal rather swiftly. If you're going to use 'Wild Thing' or 'Louie Louie' in that sense might as well just say that all of punk was not revolutionary.
Exactly why they killed it. After years of hair and glam talking about how fucking badass they are; finally there was a band that made people realize how ridiculous these guys like this were: No disrespect to Motley Crue; but Guns N Roses closed the genre with the biggest bang it ever had.
Thanks for proving my point Nirvana were just a Garage band that got lucky. Most punk was Chuck Berry filtered through the Rolling Stones, filtered through the Velvet Underground, filtered through The New York Dolls. If you add more Hairspray and make up on it you have Hair Metal. Couldnt we say 90% of rock and roll is just reworked Chuck berry riffs and 100% of Ac DC's catalog? "Smells Like Teen Spirit" actually does not have a 60's chord progression. Its 4 power Chords followed with arpeggios for the verse. But really it was a different attitude.
Topped the Billboard charts with Use Your Illusion I and II, came in at 4 with The Spaghetti Incident? (a cover album) and broke up
So they had 2 albums that were being worked on while Nevermind was, started deteoriating and released a covers album a few years later then broke up. The musical landscape changed from Nirvana and Gnr was not spared.
And punk rock got credit for killing Prog Rock. Cobain even admitted that Nirvana was essentially The Knack being attacked by Black Flag. And even Chuck Berry was reworked T. Bone Walker. And don't even get me started on how much was just ripped off Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters. Fuck even Keith Richards tuning to Open G was inspired by the Everly Brothers. Smells Like Teen Spirit was different than alot of what was on the radio at the time but not that different than alot of stuff that was going on in garages since the beginning of Rock and Roll. To me they were one step away from being the Shags: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN9UT2zF8c8"]YouTube - The Shaggs "My Pal Foot Foot" Stay Brown, Rev J
Everything in music is going to be a combination or alteration of something else. But there was an undeniable realness to Nirvana's music that just was not permeating through other hard rock at the time.
Bullshit. Those are two albums that topped the charts the same time Nevermind was climbing them, and another album, released the same year as In Utero, a cover album, that charted at number 4. The Seattle Sound definitely changed the face of music; but that has nothing to do with the implosion of Guns N Roses, or their killing of the hair genre through dominance.
What happened to fetal grunge fan? Just because Pink Floyd's The Wall reaches number 1 in 1980 doesnt mean prog rock was the thing back then. Guns n Roses obviously had built a fan base with Appetite for Destruction, Use Your Illusions probably appealed to the fans of Appetite and fans of classic rock as where Nevermind and grunge was a more youthful movement.
was not permeating through other hard rock at the time that you were aware of 'cause there was plenty of "realness" out there, before and at the time
