I want to agree, and mostly I do, but not on this issue. There has to be an element of official discretion (just like with judges). A cop shouldn't mindlessly enforce a law; I want intelligent thinking people on the force who won't screw some kid over for having half a joint in his possession.

What I'm saying is we shouldn't have idiot robots enforcing our laws. We need cops out there that have an understanding of what they are enforcing. Not just "find marijuana, slap the cuffs on." Keep in mind that servants of the community are PART of the community. They have a stake in all this too, and need to do more than just follow the letter of the law. There is a spirit to the law, and mainly, it's "protect and serve." Who is protected and served by throwing potheads in jail?

    TrippinBTM,

We are probably closer than these posts show. In theory a cop should strictly enforce the law at all tiimes. That is theory, reality is much messier. Cops should apply their knowlege of the folks involved, the situation in front of them and their common sense when enforcing laws.

That is different than making a general rule that a particular law should not be enforced.

I agree with your comments that the pot laws are stupid. But the remedy should lie outside the good sense of our law enforcment professionals. You seem to hold the position that our cops should be smarter, kinder and more aware than the folks that we elect.

You're right, we aren't disagreeing on much, and also that the remedy isn't to be found in law enforcement but in the legislatures. But the cops can do their part, as well.

Ok i dunno about where you guys live, but ive never heard of a country where the people decide on the laws.

also, i think its more of a case that cops should spend their time enforcing more IMPORTANT laws than spend their time chasing down stoners, which is purely for their own monetary gain. Stoners are the easiest to bust, and the best fines/per sin, so the reason cops chase them so much is caus theyre good money, easy arrests. if they tried more at busting coke rings and make some heroin busts, then it would be a harder job, but theyd be spending the same time fighting for the law, but in the end acheive a better result.

a dangerous cop is one who breaks the law
a cop who chooses to bust very dangerous criminals, and most likely save many lives, instead of bustin stoners for some bonus tickets, is a benefit to society.

I got arrested once... for having a little bag of weed.... the police made me suffer over nothing... I didn't like them, but now I HATE them, and my hate i gurantee transcends death, god, life, love, the law, the whole universe... Now I keep it all in the inside. Thanks for such a lovely gift...

That's gotta be quite a drag, man...

Anyways, StonerBill, the ideal is to have the laws based on the people. I don't know how things work in Australia, but here in the US we are supposed to be represented by our government, not ruled by them. It's an ideal and hard to achieve (probably never has been achieved in history), but there's no sense in just giving up on it, considering the alternative.

i have a ton of these saved around but just for quick refrence, as many members of our government have said things to this effect a sample
