I tried machines, but they suck, all of them. A 1-blade leaves me raw after the second shave and I rinse my razors well. A 2-blade is better and lasts a few more shaves. But a 3-blade, one of the major brands, is just right. I can shave baby smooth where I need to and they last for many more shaves than the rest. When I travel overseas I carry a 3-blade, just 1. If I'm working in the field and skipping shaving some days I can make a 3-blade razor last a month. I left one in the Sahara!
I use 4 bladed razors, cheap knockoffs from the dollar store on my armpits and pubes, and double bladed razors for my legs. Use soap instead of shaving cream. They work alright for me.
The whole reason for the creation of razors was a consequence of the creation of a need to shave. The whole thing is a money scam. Might as well not rip your skin to shreds with one blade while you're conforming to social norms!
Indeed, before razors nobody shaved except cowboys with their rusty knifes which they also used for dinner and cutting up their cows with (although you do have a point about it being grossly marketed and commercialized, there seems to have been a lot of guys that shaved their face before that... it's of all centuries. It being a money scam isn't (as far as i know ))
I would say that the modern prevalence of both men and women shaving is probably greater than at any point of history. And razors are ridiculously expensive. Because we "need" them. I guess what I was getting at is that it doesn't make sense to attack the number of blades in a razor as a scam, but rather the razor (shaving industry?) itself.
That's definitely true Yes, makes sense! But although razors are often ridicilous expensive, there are cheap(er) alternatives.
and the need to shave derived from the desire of not letting the other guy grab hold of your hair or beard and bash your head in. If you look back through history most of the uber bad-ass cultures sported long braids and long beards, often also braided as a taunt to their enemies and it is the basis for the underlying notion across many cultures that the longer the beard, the badder the ass! The Greeks followed by the Romans were the first to really break from this tradition and began having short cropped hair/beards for the military to prevent anyone getting a hold of it. as for me I prefer the "big brand" 2-3 bladed razors. I've tried the 99 cent store offerings but they are pretty fucking sad when it comes to the edge on the blades. I usually compromise on the cheap and get the multi packs of the BIC double edged throw-aways. They last me a week or so.
wrong. There have been periods of time in Europe when the flea and lice infestations were so bad that folks shaved their entire bodies regularly. Ever hear of a merkin?
Clippers for the neck and scissors for the face. Ive thought about getting a straight or safety razor for my neck, because it gets razor burn really bad from the multiblades. But I keep my beard long enough now that clippers do just fine.
I discovered this a long time ago. I used to use Wilkinson Sword blades as they seemed to last the longest. Then the multiblade razors came out and I discovered they got CLOGGED very quickly with hair and shave cream. Then it's difficult to clean them too, while you're in the midst of shaving. Now I just use the cheapest one blade razor (or an electric razor). They have a LOT of space between the blade and the guard, so they're easy to clean! PR, since you have a beard now, you might want to invest in an electric trimmer. The new ones assume you want to have a beard, so they give you like 5 or more settings for beard length. I always wondered how actors could keep the same 3-day or 5-day or 2 week beard in every scene. Now I know, they use these new trimmers.
I agree. Classic example of marketing leveraging a bullshit product, IMO. I tend to shave every few days. Multi blades tangle a bit. And if you shave well, a single blade can cut really well. Who ever saw a barber shaving with a multi head blade? Gilette Fusion wear out so quickly too. Not just the blade but the lubrastrip. Its just designed to extract as much money as possible. And I know that a lot of the blades are counterfeit anyway (wherever you buy them from!) - such is the result of an overpriced product. Personally, I like something really sharp and single headed. Maybe sometimes I'll use a multi blade, but not that often.
i have an electric beard trimmer, but i never use it. no matter how many times i go over my face, it always leaves a bunch of stray long hairs. i find it works much better to just go over it with scissors every couple days. i usually do it while i'm sitting around on hipforums or something, so it's not like it's taking any extra time or anything.
Good electric shaver in my case. I haven't had razor burn in years and also haven't spend money on shaving in years. I rarely shave more than twice a week though so maybe if I wanted to be baby smooth every day it would be a different situation. But I also noticed you can buy good razors for cheap online. Anyway, scraping your face with a razor every day is not really good for any skin in the long run (probably still beats radioactivity )
