I'm just curious how you know what it was like back in the day? Many bands were underground for a long time back then too before they received radio play and became more accesible. Led Zeppelin was a completely underground movement - hardly any promotion at all.

Personally, I find that the last 20 years have produced some of my favorite bands and music of all time. Then again you wouldn't hear a lick of it on the radio for the most part.

There is great new music out there! You just have to have the time and wont to search for it! You can't expect that every great band is going to be heard on MTV or VH1.
If you search, you can find some great music! And the best part is that certain sounds are starting to mesh and morph into completely different genres and sounds!
R&B and rock, country and rap, bluegrass and jazz....the list goes on!

Search for it and it will come!

PS...Slipknot and Mudvayne are kinda sucky...

The problem is not with the music, it's with the broadcasting of the music. Corporate controlled Clear Channel stations only play shit on the radio, formulaic, mind-numbing shit for everyone to listen to. And the TV channels are equally bad. I remember in the eighties, you would have bands like Radiohead, REM, Cowboy Junkies and Jane's Addiction all at the same time in the VH1 charts. Today it's all lame Lavignes and Spears and Beyonces until it drives you crazy. Fortunately, if you spend a little time, you can find a lot of great new bands playing in bars, or selling their music on the net (have you guys ever listened to Bubblemath? Man, its like a new King Crimson being born, and nobody knows about them!). The talent is still there, it's just not being promoted. In today's VH1, Janis Joplin or Stevie Ray Vaughn would not get any airtime, because they weren't beautiful. Nobody cares how bad one of the new shit-performers sings or plays, as long as they look good. And that's sad.

Hey, you should all be glad to hear this:

We live in a time right now where the advancment of technology will lead to the inevitable downfall of the RIAA, the pop music marketplace, and target-market music writing. Because of internet piracy, pro-tools, and the ease at which one can, with a little work, produce and essentially print their own albums at home to be sold at shows, in stores, or on the net, we will in our lifetime witness a change in the music industry. Think of it, if you could record your band at home and produce a quality sounding album without having to have some corporation front you the money in exchange for your integrity or the rights to a % of your profits, then why the fuck would you want/need them at all? You could tell Sony, BMG, and Capitol records to go fuck themselves because you have the means to do what they do without having to pay them a cent. Watch and you will see that I am right about this.

I would know too, I am going to be a studio engineer when I am done in school. I will work in the industry and witness/force this change. ART WILL BE IN THE HANDS OF THE CREATORS AGAIN!!!

Well, some artists want those corporations for promotion. I don't think that will totally disappear. So the artists you'll see on tv and stuff will be the same commercial music that it is now.

I got mine at Amazon.com. You can listen to some samples there too. Or you can go to their website: www.bubblemath.com and click Multimedia. They have 4 songs there in MP3. BTW, the name of their first (and so far only) album is Such Fine Particles of the Universe. Give them a try, they're really worth it.

And if you're interested in new progressive rock that's out of the mainstream, visit prog4you.com

I agree with you, but the corporations will leave those of us who want to keep our artistic integrity alone at least (and by alone I mean they will have no power over us). Obviously they will still lambast us with commercials, but maybe ppl will be making their own shows at home too and broadcasting them on the net by then so we wont have to even own a TV. LOL That would be funny as hell.

The important thing is more music that is about writing music, not about making money. Remember the days of the bard.
