I put Dragonforce and Necrophagist on the same level, with the advantage given to Necrophagist just because they play death metal But compare them fundamentally. Dragonforce put out music sacrificing song writing for speed, and Necrophagist put out music sacrificing song writing for technicality. Same shit different toilet.
Holy shit man that's the exact way I look at Necrophagist. Sometimes I just can't listen to them because there's no "flow" to their music. It's all really fast tempo changes and shit... Sometimes I like listening to that kind of stuff though. Here's an example of what I don't like and then do like about Necrophagist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SRD6mjrUMo <-- this song has the examples Good Necrophagist: 2:04 - 2:20 There's a heavy fuckin' riff. This is sicl. Bad Necrophagist: 0:15 - 0:37 This has no feeling too it... It ruins the song for me. But here's why I love Necrophagist: 3:02 - 4:30 The solos are just so awesome because all of a sudden the drums go all thrashy and shit. So fuckin' sick.
I'm not much into tech death, but I do like a few bands. Psycroptic is incredibly technical and has GREAT song writing. Decrepit Birth is also very good, but a lot of their stuff is unmemorable because they basically play a riff for 2 or 3 measures, then jump right into another.
I'll add those to my list of bands to check out.... Yes I actually have a list on my computer.. there's so many bands on it lol.
You'll like them if you like Necrophagist I think. I see Necrophagist as like the generic model base for all tech-death, and both these guys add on to what they do.
I know exactly what you mean. I see them as a novelty band, like dethklock. Fun live, but I can't be arsed to actually sit through one of their tracks playing on a cd. If I could see Spinal Tap live, I would, but it's not because the music is good.
