yeah, it does look fairly simplebut it looks like it takes time unless youdeclare you're a refugee.. i'm always interested in people who've actually expatriated themselves from the usa. it seems so alien to me. i like it here. http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=6704292
Ugh, watching his news conference made me want to vomit. I have to admit though that I am mainly concerned about the environment and Bush's seeming willingness to destroy it. Oh well, who needs a healthy environment? I am somewhat worried about myself or the people I love being drafted for a pointless horrible war, but if that happens I just won't go and I don't care what they do to me.
Well seeing as my feet have never touched American soil I may not be in a position to comment, but I will anyway, there's far more cultural diversity far more history and far more emphasis on the Arts in Europe than in America and one does not need to have been to America to know that. I personally from what I see/read about America would not personally want to live there. As for your comment about the French and Germans, the Germans are far from arrogant and are a lovely people. Also as for the French being arrogant there is an air about the French which to some American who is not use to the major cultural differences in the small landspace that is Europe may seem to be arrogance but I can assure you is not.
can i therefore say that other people assuming americans are arrogant is just a misconception of the "aura" hanging about us?
I'm so glad Kerry didn't win because he wanted 800,000 more troops in Iraq, and he wanted to take out 800,000 of the ones that are in Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea and shit which would mean 1,600,000 more soldiers which means we would have needed to draft and that would be horrible. If there was a draft like half of the people I know would be vulnerable to drafting (including my brother). Kerry sucks. At least with Bush we won't need a draft at least not for a few more years
(I posted this yesterday in a similar thread in the Rainbow Family Forum) I'm still in shock, myself. I keep thinking I'll wake up and it will all have been a dream. Well, we survived 12 years of Regan and George I. I heard John Dean say on NPR that the Bush White House is more secretive than Nixon's was. Maybe George II will find his John Dean, and once again the American President will be leaving the White House one step ahead of the Sherriff... I read today's Doonesbury after I posted this. Honest. I also found the following, from Reuters:http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=583&e=3&u=/nm/20041105/od_nm/canada_usa_dc What has really crawled up under my skin is the support Bush recieved from the Christian Right. Killing babies in the womb is immoral, but killing Iraqi children is moral? These folks voted for a president who promises to keep our nation's moral fiber strong with his homophobia, yet he pursues an unjust war, by St Augustine's deffinition. Somebody has to save Jesus from these people! John Prine said it well: "Now Jesus don't like killin' / No matter what the reason's for"
my take on the iraq debacle, being a ill thought out move though it was (well, i'll get to wandering in my complaints and won't get to the bright side) is that there were MORE kids dying ounder saddam. i dunno, it's a stretch, but i'm making a point of trying to find the bright side.
The assumption that Americans are arrogant probably comes from the fact that Europeans see Americans to be very loud and sure of themselves and this comes across as as them having an air of arrogance, which probably isn't always the case. I could safely say though that's the majority of Americans I've met have been quite full of themselves, mainly the older ones though who come to Ireland to play golf though. One of the refreshing things about this site though is I never met so many down to earth Americans in the one place!!
There's a radio program Over Here, A Prairie Home Companion, http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/ that expresses the views of many of us who voted for The Right Guy. It will take a week or so for the script of the 6 November show to get online, but check it out when it does. "Disenfranchise the Christian Right. They are already Citizens of Heaven..."
lol. you've probably met my dad, then. he's scottish by way of new york. very loud man. i've noticed older people everywehere are kinda snooty. don't have the patience to be nice anymore. we're probably just so loud because there so much space between us taht we have to shout to be heard. that or we're just very enthusiastic.
