Hi beatlerific. Go where, Copper Mountain or Wakarusa? Do you live in Colorado? Maybe I'll see ya 'round! Peace, Mellow
hijack] mike do you hit denver/boulder shows at all? oh, and I really reccomend seeing DJ Lorin/ Bassnectar at 8150 before the wrecking ball comes.
oooh Beatle, round up some friends and head up to DeKalb to the House Cafe when the professor is in the house...er...literally. http://www.thehousecafe.net/index.html look for NIU and Fareed Haque (he's the owner and a dear bud o' mine)
mmm thats a hard one. i love the grateful dead and phish but string cheese incident can give a really good 40 minute jam that sends everyone into a dance. run like an antelope out of control!
ozric tentacles blows my mind, anyone knows them? they are british i actually ain't that much into the jamband scene, so if you know even better bands similar to ozrics, let me know please
I recently got into Ozric Tentacles, I hadn't ever heard them until a few months ago, though they've been around for forever. I'd recommend you give a listen to Lotus, Pnuma Trio, Particle, and Signal Path, to name a few. Also the Disco Biscuits. You can stream and download free shows at www.archive.org/details/etree. Lots of good music here. No band I've ever heard can be compared to Ozrics though. I cant wait to see them this summer at Waka. Later, Mellow
Beatlerific, You should definetly get to Wakarusa if you can. The band mentioned above, Ozric Tentacles, is just one of the many face melting reasons to show up. I hope to see you there, I'll be the guy dancing his ass off in VIP! Later, Mellow
i really don't get what the big deal about UM is about...can someone tell me why they're so great? i bought Anchor and wasn't impressed. what am i missing?
Personally I can't really tell you because it's hard for me to find what people don't see in them and its hard for me to explain what I do see in them. I believe that umphreys is a great band and that you should give them a proper chance and enough time to find whats so special. Now you may just not like them because some people truly do not after hearing them plenty. I recomend however seeing them live because no live or studio recording can compare to the experience. I can't get enough of it. But then again I loved Anchor Drops right away so it could just be preference.
when i was at WAKA 05, i was so bored. the show was so bad. i saw them in LA and it wasn't nearly as bad....but still not my cup of tea...
I picked up Safety in Numbers as my first UM cd. It's like a blend of Phish and Steely Dan -- in some ways it's like Junta, though more self-aware and not as organic, almost as if UM wants to call attention to how good they are. Still, I've never seen them live, so I don;t know how much they jam their songs out. I'd hate to judge them by one album. That would be like everyone judging Phish by Hoist (as happened in 95).
The Grateful Dead..you just can't get better than that as far as jam bands are concerned, although many have tried.
