Definetly the Dead.... heres a nice link to a whole list of recorded shows by year http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=GratefulDead&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fyear
I've never been a big fan of Panic but I've gotta say that Driving Song is probably my favorite song ever. My favorite jam band is Umphrey's though. Although they might get some serious competition if Keller starts playing with a good band full-time like he's been talking about. And as for the people who said they didn't like umphrey's, I actually didn't like them at first either until I heard In The Kitchen, and after that I was hooked. The other song that got me into them was All Things Ninja.
I urge folks who say they don't like Umphrey's to listen to some of the podcasts on the UM website. http://www.umphreys.com/music/podcasts.php?linkId=103 No doubt, Umph is one of the sickest...
^^i've seen umphrey's plenty of times.. listened to studio shit, live shit. still. does nothing for me.
UM makes me cum, then eat my my cum, then cum again.... but I'm easy to impress, i just like to groove.
Such a hard call considering I am absolutely obsessed with music...its a toss up between Widespread Panic and Grateful Dead. I know people don't really think of the Dead as "Jam" but I include them in my favorite any type of band. Even when people ask me what are some of my favorite folk, bluegrass, or rock bands are Grateful Dead always tops the list. Thats why I love them so much, they are so amazing that you can't put them in one catagory!
I concur........ i just cant get into to...ill start getting into it and all the sudden they will just go a complete opposite direction
Wow! IS it true that some people don't think of the Dead as "jam"? I mean, didn't they help start it all? Yes, they weren't as jam dependent as Phish, but when they pulled out a 15 minute "Eyes," or a 12 minute "Franklin's Tower," or a wonderful circa 1978 37 minute "Darkstar" then that's true rock jamming.
i hate when people get all technical with what a 'jamband' is.....the Dead are the original jam band. the only reason bands like Phish, Ums, Moe...etc...exist is because of the Dead. they are Jam...the original jam band.
I wish it wasn't true, but yes, I have had people tell me that before, but it usually comes from people who dislike jambands anyway so I just like to ignore them and say "THE GRATEFUL DEAD IS THE BEST JAM BAND EVER!!!". And yes, of course the Dead was around way before Phish and anyone else, but I guess some people just don't appreciate the fact that none of todays jam scene wouldn't even exist without The Dead taking the first step. I'm glad you all think those folks are crazy for saying that too!
i know Ive commented in this thread before... but I'm changing my answer. My favorite jam band is "The Natural Breakdown" they are love.
re: the dead and Jam as label. GD brought the improv of jazz and the fireside pick to rock and roll, a structured musical form. They are the godfathers of jam. They did come to this at the time when rock fusion was birthed, but for the improv edge, they are the surviving (beyond 1975), carry it forward band.
