I would like to add that the Mayans have not predicted the "end" of anything. But only a change, a new chapter. This is not the first time a Mayan calender has ended, and it won't be the last.

It's funny how so many people who know nothing about Mayan culture put words into the mouths of Mayans. Telling the world that "the Mayans say the end is near!" How many of these people have been Mayan?

Apparently the astros have done their calculations and it will be a near miss.As the asteroid is passing so close - it should be visible in the Northeren hemisphere - it affords the astros great opportunity for study.We are in more danger when it swings around again in about a hundred years.The asteroid is however the closest fly by we have had since the advent of observational scientific instruments.

 

200 meters.. .. .. that s say, ~ 1 megaton.after ablation. depends of course where it lands.

I heard the total number of scientists on asteroid watch in the world is less than the staff at a McDonalds. However, the asteroid paint idea is very creative. I can already see the Doomsday sign wielding people reserving their street corners now.
