EEk don't cut them off please. I'd miss your quality posts if you did (that's assuming you'd stop posting). I sympathise with your job commitments I really do, but maybe they'll turn the corner soon and start looking "better" to the general public. I wish you the very best of luck:)

    Thanks M [hugs] :)

I'm just having a crap day. A shitty, bad hair day. I guess it's pretty inevitable, though, that at some point during the process it's gonna feel like satan's own butt-crack fuzz would look more attractive than the chaos on your head! An it's not called the 'teenage' phase for nothing. I'm just having a little trouble liking my unruly, rebellious, adolescent dreadlings right now.

Thankfully, I think I can count the total number of bad-hair days since I started on one hand, so i've not done too badly. I'm just trying to tell myself that I'll be back to loving them by next week, that work will be fine, that they're getting tighter every day...blah, blah. Chin up, an' all that.

I've also just realised my dreads have reached their 3mth mark and I've not got round to posting a single picture on here yet. So... my mission for the next week is...

started to reply then my damn browserr closed
    hedgemonkety

the years estimate is purely a scare =tactic used to sell wax
they scare u into thinkimg without it u look like shit for years
    thasts bs
most natural dreads klook good in months,, some longer yea but niot alot
u went on to say your backcombing fell out and u had no idea how long natural would take then said yours are mostly natural and didnt take long at all
    circular nlogic here.
if u tried natural for 2 months yioud be just wghere yawrre at 2 months right? the backcomb difd almost nothing for ya.

alotta the disatisfaction ya feel is common with those who backcomb, they expect prettier results faster so becime disastisfied with every lil problem
natural dreadies embrace the messiness knowing it leads to perfect dreads so the more mess they see earlky on the more satisfied they are with the progress
see how i mean the process feels better?

but ok so ya had to look good for work thats understandable and certainly a legit reason to trey to rush the looking good stage.
but yioyur at that wall, wondering where to go from thyerer stick it out oe give up
u definately shoud hold ouit its gonna get better.

can u give pics? (in your own thread) we can maybe help ya tame the stage your in to help things look lil better.
most likelkt y though the problems in your mind not on your head.

Backcombs never completely fall out, not unless you brush them. The hair will roughly stay in the sections they were combed into even though they do unravel considerably. Some of mine have unravelled totally - the ones at the back underneath, in particular - and some around the crown have held together from day one. These are much further along dreading than those at the back - particulary the odd 1 or 2 that I idly 'twiddle' with when I'm not paying attention.

i agree with the most part with what your saying SE. Certainly the 'twiddled' dreads have a much rounder uniform, almost palm-rolled, shape than the rest on my head, and I much prefer the kooky, strange shapes of those that have been left to do their own sweet thing. The ones that unravelled the most are still the softest and fluffiest and have the most undreaded hair, but they're also the loopiest and most oddly shaped.

I think at the moment I'm just pissed off cos they're shrinking so much. i'm having difficulty tying them back to keep them neat(ish) for work. Some of the shorter layers in my hair were only 5-6 inches to begin with and after 3 months some have shrivelled up to 2-3 inches. i'm wondering how much shorter they're gonna get.

I'll try and get some pics up soon.

    ahhhh i unsderstand
but your probkly close to ternminal shrinkage snow and yea that short stubby sticking in every direction looks jnot my fave, but it can be fun and funky too, niot really neat and professional, but a headband or such can smooth things out, or a headwrap?
could ya get away with a headfwrap wwith the short lil dreasdies poking out the top?

have no fear, they will begin growing soon
i know the 1st day i was able to tie mine back with my own dreasds was a really happy day.
till then headbands wrapds hats will help ya look pressentable
(do u rip often? the connected hairs at the roots can contribvute to shrinkage, breaking them often frees the hair to get lil longer) or at least i find thatt

pics tomoro..we demand em! we'll come after ya if u diont..lol

EEEK, glad I don't have work commitments like some^^I'm an artist and a mama so my hair doesn't have to look professional. Just has to be tied back so baby doesn't pull and chew on it or so I don't get paint in it (again)
can't wait to see some pics urbanhedgemonkey^-^I'm sure they look a lot better that you think. I know posting my pics on here has given me a lot of confidence in my dreads which before I was a lil unsure of them.
ohh and F.O.G, welcomeee^-^glad your starting your journey again,g'luck too

SE, I've seen you say before that with the backcombing method the backcombed dreads will just unravel and start to dread themselves. Does this mean using the backcombing method with no wax is your definition of natural?

nah..and they dont always unravel completely
by definition of natural, they are left to form on theyre own without drastic intervention
(lil fiddling with hair u might do as a nervouse habbot doesnt count as drastic intervention, only things designed to "make" dreads instead of alowing dreads to happen)

but theres a blurriness in the definition, some concider anything wax chemicakl free to be natural

then theres the makers of synthetic dreads that also offer "natural" dreads meaning dreads made from hair not plastic that then are glued onto your head.

now its odvios that gluing a rats tail to your heads not natural just caise u call it natural, so the definition sdhoukld ber clear..natural dreads happen naturaly from tye start.

again i said they are left to form naturaly, ripping congoes doesnt help them form it prevents them from over forming
it is natural, as you need to be able to get at the scalp to clean it so must seperate dreads in order to rwach the scalp in between

    relax
    ripping is natural
watch monkeys grooming they seperate the hairs to see the scalp picking out dirt and bugs
without ripping you cannot keep the scalp clean like you need to.so yohave to dig down between dreads to the scalp to scrape awawy crust and crap

hummm Im not a monkey and if some dude walked up to me and started grooming my head , hes getting bitched smacked!!! and my pimp hand is strong :)

so then are there varied levels in naturalness/neglect...like in karate?
so since i did backcomb but have not waxed in months...am I now a natural? Maybe a yellow belt???
