Yeah, I went with the ping-pong ball idea.

We do weekly writings. The purpose is to get us prepared for the ACT (A big standardized test that all the Juniors have to take). So we do an essay, and then our teacher corrects it and tells us what we need to work on and everything like that.

So in the exam you'll be writing on whatever you want to?

No, they give us a topic. Normally, these writings aren't on whatever we want, but they have been the last couple of times. Normally, we do them on like a book or something that we've been discussing in class.

what!? they require the ACT now, even if you aren't going to college? do they still make you pay for it?

and there's an essay portion now? that seems ridiculously unfair. you can't have a "standardized" essay; grading would be based purely on the subjective opinion of the scorer. so if you get the wrong guy reading your essay, he could end up costing you thousands of dollars in scholarship money. that's some fucking BS.

I once wrote an essay on how to turn a conversation awkward.

ex:When you say hi to someone and another person walks up to you and says you know him, i always say, "yes...we're lovers"

that can turn a conversation awkward real fast

I sometimes raise my voice and go "Are you ashamed of our love?" when I'm chatting with a friend in a mall or whatever public place.

No, we don't have to pay for it. But like, everyone comes in and they lock us all in the gym, and if anyone does something bad, all the tests get thrown out. It's kinda insane.

Honestly, I don't even know for sure if there's an essay portion. Our teacher may just want us to do really good on the reading/english skills of the test. I don't know.

And yeah, I've always kinda wondered that about the scorers too. There's nooo way to possibly grade everyone fairly, because even if you had the the same exact guy do every one, his mood, etc. would fluctuate. Unless you had a robot. Hmmm.

that's still fucked up that they force you to take it. it was purely optional when i was in school. so you were able to take it with other people serious about going to college, instead of a room full of soon-to-be-dropouts who are going to fuck it up for everyone by creating a disturbance...

but yeah, it was entirely multiple choice when i took it, so there was no worry about scorer bias.

i'm still not sure how much writing essays would help even with reading/english. the reading part was purely reading comprehension, which has very little to do with essay writing. and the english part was mostly about vocabulary/grammar. which is generally not considered important when grading high school essays anyway.

the whole concept of studying/preparing for a standardized aptitude test always seemed absolutely nonsensical to me anyway. the whole point is to find out how good you are at these subjects, not how well you can study.

Well, our teacher is like a huge stickler about grammer/vocabulary/mechanics in these essays. So I guess that might help a little bit. I don't know. I never do too well on them, namely because 1) I wait until the last hour or so to do them 2) I write them and don't reread them at ALL 3) I don't really care. I have more important things to do. Grades mean nothing to me.

Good Lord!!! I found someone with the same 'philosophy' on studying. I'm that way about all of the school tests. Like, if you need to study something to know it, that means you didn't retain the information, which is kinda the point of doing it. Kinda makes me mad when people give me crap for not studying. Especially teachers. I'll just start telling them to better live up to their titles.

All the tests get thrown out? If someone does something here then that person gets all their tests cancelled with whichever exam board the exam was with.

Yeah. Like, if someone just yells: 1 is A. 2 is C. 3 is E. etc. until they get tackled or whatever, everyone has to restart from the beginning. And the guilty person probably gets shot afterschool.

    haha.. nice. :D

Yeah, I get why they do it in that case, I meant something like having a phone in the exam or talking to someone next to them.

Oh yeah. All that stuff too.

Last year, two kids got kicked out because the kid sitting in front of them had his crack hanging out of his pants, so they were laughing, and then they came over and tore up there tests.

Then someone else like asked the person next to them to use their calculator because their batteries died, and they both got their tests thrown away.

    It's pretty ridiculous.

ach. Yeah, last year I know this girl who took a screwdriver and spare batteries in with her calculator just in case it ran out. It did and it came in useful...

But I can understand them being untrusting of people in tests, people cheat, a lot. Couldn't they have asked a regulator?

Yeah. They're like really strict. I guess that the room has to be at a certain temperature, stuff like that. It's has to be like this at every school that administers the test.

Also last year, there was a kid, and they wouldn't let him out of the gym, but he had to puke really badly, and they still wouldn't let him out. So he just puked all over the floor. I kinda think not letting someone out despite the fact that they're going to throw up crosses the line.
