I guess I can understand how people don't like them, it is a very different sound so if you don't like you probably are going to hate it. I'd be surprised to hear what you think of them had you been at this show, though. I was a fan before but really, it was a mind blowing experience in person. I would think anyone would appreciate the instrumentation but who knows. Anyway, no I saw built to spill again. Really bummed about it too because I talked for months to my girlfriend about how amazing they are live, and it sucked. It was in a small venue that really wasn't suited for them and then something was up with the sound guy. The vocals were almost not there and people were literally yelling between songs to turn up the vocals.. At one point Doug was like look, we can't turn it up these PAs are maxed out and we can't turn them up anymore. It got a little better toward the end but was definitely nothing like last year.
yeah, it sounds pretty cool for them to be playing obscure instruments and switching in and out. sucks about the built to spill show. the sound was excellent the 2nd time i saw them, at a small, indoor venue. 1st time was a free outdoor concert, sounded good too, but not like the other one. i would love to see them again. search on youtube for Built to Spill KEXP...4 great live songs, and the most i've ever seen Doug talk in an interview.
