Well it may be something to do with the several centuries between them, roamy?

But then,Shakespeare never once went to jail, whereas Oscar,[God bless him] was very familiar with the inside of cells.

But on the other hand,Oscar went to America-Will never got further than Holland.

    Ah,roamy my darlin'.
Aren't you knowing the current English people had nothing to do with those protestant overlords...but yes, until the late 1960's,public displays of homosexuality got you put inside.

Oscar WAS a genius, fluent in both French & German, plus he studied the Classics at Oxford. His epigrams, plus 'The picture of Dorian Gray' & 'Salome' were works of writing genius.....but trying to sue the Marquis of Queensbury for libel unearthed his homosexuality with the Marquess's own son,Alfred!
NOT a moment of genius, you'll agree?
I know he wrote 'De Profundis' while in prison, and I agree it's a very dark and epic read.....but he died penniless & destitute as a result of his court case against a man who had born him no ill-will.
    Plus he was just 46,roamy.

Yes,I've read his biography, plus several of his works....but wouldn't you think a man of such literary genius would know when NOT to step into the limelight?
