I saw it a few weeks ago. It wasn't what I expected- I expected it to be the story about Woodstock the festival, and about the music, and the people who went. It was more about the struggles of a young man and his family business, and how he saves the business by calling Michael Lang up and telling him about a site to hold Woodstock. Once I got over the fact that it wasn't about the concert or the music, the movie itself wasn't that bad. I actually enjoyed it. Jonathan Groff (who played Michael Lang) was very good, even though his part wasn't huge, (plus, he's even more gorgeous as hippie. For those who have seen him in Spring Awakening on Broadway, I think the long hair suits him better). There were a few trip scenes, a drag queen, and lots of nudity, but in my opinion, not enough music. There are a few decently good twists along the plot, and overall, I thought it was a pretty good movie.
Yeah, the movie is not a recreation of the festival, or an attempt to rehash all the highlights. It's based on the story of Elliot Tiber, who helped his folks run a failing motel. It's about how he hooked Michael Lang up with Max Yasgur, and it's about his own experiences at and around the festival. The closest you come to the music is to hear some of it occasionally as a background soundtrack. There are some well known highlights that were incorporated into the movie. A Wavy Gravy character is seen walking through the crowd in his white jumpsuit and over-sized cowboy hat. Some mudsliding scenes are there. The nude bathing. But mostly, the action takes place around the motel. Those wishing to see a reinactment of the festival will be disappointed.
It was dull in the beginning, but during the middle and end I was pulled into a trance. It was a great movie and I recommend everyone to see it. It's so believable how much Woodstock changed people and how monumental the event was. Of course it doesn't compare to the actual movie, but it still was an excellent movie.
It had one of the best "LSD trip" scenes, ever. I don't know about other's experiences, but I have to say that this is the best visual representation of my experiences that I've ever seen on a movie screen. Now, if they can figure out a way to recreate the emotional and physical feeling as well, we'll be able to get high without taking drugs.
