Some of them don't. I've seen people smoke pot on the streets. But it's really not something you should be doing, since most cops are not that liberal. Yeah.
Heyyo. I'm From BC Canada. By the looks of replys to this forum seems like there are quite a number of canadians out thurrrrr
I don't know about Toronto, but in Vancouver you can smoke weed in the streets and the cops won't do anything. Drinking age is 19 in BC, different in other provinces, and there are cafe's that let you light up, but they don't actually sell.
It may have been true at one point in time that you could smoke in public in Vancouver with virtually no worry of being hassled by the cops. Canada however has lately re-written some of the pot laws and now, cops are able to give tickets for simple possession. It used to be that the cops wouldn't bother with busting someone for burning a joint because it was too much hassle for them, paperwork and stuff... now however, they can give you a ticket in a couple mins and that's it. People think that the new pot laws are more liberal, but in fact it's the opposite... politicians knew that the police, the courts, the public were sick and tired of pot smokers tying up the legal system and COSTING the system money to prosecute... NOW, pot smokers can be used as a source of REVENUE for the government... making it much easier to enforce the laws, giving cops the incentive by making it easy and quick to ticket a person, and giving the city incentive by the promise of revenue from the tickets. Also, with Vancouver/Whistler being the site of the 2010 Olympics, Vancouver has undertaken steps to 'clean-up' the drug problem (which really means just making it more transparent, shifting it from one area of the city to another)... trying to clean up it's image in the media from being portrayed as a drug mecca. For fellow Vancouverites, haven't you noticed the pressure that was put on the Main/Hastings area when the Olympic comittee was here checking things out. There are now more police in Vancouver than there were last year and i believe something like 8 more cops were hired simply to address the drug issues of the city. You should also note that the DEA have an office here in Vancouver and work closely with local authorities to bring down grow-ops and high-level dealers. Authorities here may be more liberal than most US states, but it's definately not overlooked... when have you ever known the government to turn down extra cashflow? At least when you get ticketed, the cops are still fairly friendly... they give you the standard speech about keeping it out of public, and as long as your not an asshole, you'll be on your way in a couple of mins... minus whatever weed you had in your pocket. (my friend was ticketed last month for burning out front of Starbucks-$95.00) So far i haven't heard of them ticketing people at the cafe's that allow people to smoke, and it's still VERY easy to find herb all over the city... it's just that now the city can get in on the action by making some money. Jeez, that was a much longer post than i intended...
I was under the impression that it hasn't been decriminalized yet, but I could be wrong. From my experience, however, its never been a big deal.
And in Alberta and Manitoba. I've noticed it goes 19,18,19,18,19,18,19,18 pretty much right across the country... guarenteeing road trips to neighbouring provinces on many 18th birthdays!
