do not equate president obama with the entire federal government. we have three branches of federal government and each branch checks the power of the others. obama does not have the final word on many of the decisions that are made.

I hate to say what is most certainly a cliche these days, but the government, even though it has been compromised by PACs and corporations, can still be viable if people are educated. As long as people refuse to read (BOOKS not blogs, websites, etc... books written and sourced thoroughly and honestly) then a democratic republic or democracy in general can never work.

Just look how easily the right can be swayed just by using key words like 'freedom' 'socialism' 'leftist' 'marxist' and they froth at the mouth like a pack of wild animals.

I cannot help but wonder if the internet is the worst thing that ever happened to the American electorate. So many people believe google is a substitute for an actual education.

before the internet, there was the powerful newspaper and television. one source of media has just replaced another. if anything, the internet makes it easier for those that are interested in investigating to access scholarly sources on the subject.

But even still, who would only trust the newspaper and television? This has been a mistake for quite some time - as was evidenced by yellow journalism a century ago. I'm talking about academics - getting the full picture on a subject. Sure you can use the internet to do some cross referencing, but as I said - it is no substitute and using it as one will not free a person from ignorance.

I also question how many people know how to find credible sources on the internet, and do they even know the difference? I surmise they simply find the one that mostly agrees with what they already thought. At least with text, you can check the footnotes, cross reference it, see the scholars behind the research.

Well this sort of thing is supposed to be taught in university. But most people never go to university and many university grads get caught up "playing the game." Whereas real academics tend to become a small group that gets pushed to the outskirts of mainstream society.

i agree, that most people that even look into information they see in the media (about 2% of citizens) may not know how to find primary, scholarly sources on the internet. but,i do, and it's not that difficult. not easy enough for most though. it requires minimal effort lol.

i did an entire research manuscript and thesis by accessing texts on the internet. so, this information is available on the web.

Yeah I hear you, and that's awesome. But something tells me that the people who wouldn't bother to read a credible and well sourced book probably won't read credible and a well sourced books (or texts I guess would be the better term!) on the internet.
