Occupy Wall Street In Solidarity With Labor Unions

Some 20,000 people are taking part in the march demanding accountability from their elected officials. The people are from various labor unions and include teachers and electricity workers. The event has been peaceful so far.

According to RT’s correspondent there are about 1,000 police officers on the streets and three helicopters hovering over the crowd

The crowd is chanting “We are the 99 per cent” and say that there is an attack on the working class and that hard-working Americans are losing their jobs while the rich are getting richer.

OWS Hunger Strike for New Outdoor Occupation

On Saturday, December 3, in Liberty Plaza, we—THE OWS HUNGER STRIKERS—began a hunger strike. We are striking to demand outdoor space for a new occupation. We are holding our strike at Duarte Square on Sixth Avenue and Canal Street in Manhattan as part of a continued effort seeking sanctuary on Trinity Church’s unused land.

This is a call for escalation, in response to the escalated levels of government-enacted violence and repression The Occupy Movement has endured over the last few weeks. In dozens of cities across the nation, Mayors chose to stifle freedom of speech and the right to assemble by evicting peaceful occupations using illegal and unconstitutional force. Here in New York, on the night of November 14, the City—under orders from Mayor Bloomberg—violently evicted our community from Liberty Square.

For our movement to grow we need new, outdoor space. We need to hear the voices of those who for too long have been voiceless. We recognize the long history of hunger strikes as a radical action that has liberated countries, communities and individuals from repression, slavery and injustice. From colonial India to modern Turkey; from the Northern Ireland H-Block cells to Palestinian prisons; from 1970s Cuba to present-day California, hunger strikes have amplified the voices of the oppressed to declare they have been silenced for far too long.

The 99% has been been oppressed and silenced for far too long. Therefore, THE OWS HUNGER STRIKERS are hunger striking to demand the right to create space for The Occupy Movement to rise up and speak out.

You can help by bringing blankets and warm clothes, as well as hot water, lemon, cayenne pepper and maple syrup to Sixth Avenue and Canal Street. We will live there, day and night, until our movement has unfettered access to this space.

Occupy Wall Street Launches Hunger Strike Against Trinity Church; Demands Use of Vacant Lot

This action could be seen as Occupiers biting the hand that’s fed them: Trinity Church has been letting OWS use its Charlotte’s Place property on Greenwich Street between Rector and Carlisle for WiFi and power sources for over two months . Charlotte’s Place has also held mediation meetings with titles such as “Unlikely Allies: How Can Occupy Wall Street and Wall Street Learn to Hear One Another? “

Laura Gottesdiener, one of the supporters of the hunger strike, clarifies that the strike is in no way to undermine the work Trinity Church has done by letting OWS use their space.

“They’ve allowed us to use facilities, to be part of their services, and have reached out to community to find places for Spokes Council,” said Ms. Gottesdiener by phone. “The hunger strike is an effort to reach out to Trinity Wall Street Church’s community, and especially Rector (Jim) Cooper, who has open say over all the church’s properties, including the open space on Duarte Street, and express the seriousness of OWS needing to have an outdoor occupation.”

The issue, Ms. Gottesdiener explained, was that Trinity Wall Street Church (whose commercial branch is Trinity Real Estate, one of the largest landowners in NYC and owner of Hudson Square Properties ) had not protected the protesters when they were arrested on the vacant property on November 15th, a day after the raids on Zuccotti Park.

“That day, a delegation of OWS members and members from other clergies and religious groups sat down with (Rector) Cooper and the Trinity community and asked if we could use the space. They didn’t give us an answer – but when they allowed 25 members to be arrested on their property, we took that as an answer. They did not call off the police.”

- they claim "this is not a wishy -washy stance"- , it sounds like an unwillingness to commit, to me- - - > In the end, churches are a business too- (largest landowners in NYC and owner of Hudson Square Properties )

Trinity Church stands at the corner of Broadway and Wall Street, where the country's formative revolution swirled around its feet and through its doors, and it has spent more than 300 years learning how to be part of the 100 percent. We have built deep relationships with all of lower Manhattan, and our new neighborhood center, Charlotte's Place, is providing pastoral care and respite to our new neighbors while we are discussing how to convene meaningful conversations among people of radically diverging viewpoints.

None of us fully understands what's going on right now, or where it will go next, but we are confident in our role: listening, convening, listening some more, speaking the challenge of Good News, and keeping our doors wide open in the middle of the whole mess of humanity. This is not a wishy-washy stance. We speak, listen, challenge, convene, and converse with the 100 percent as an anchor, not as a compromise or for lack of conviction.

That is an often-uncomfortable place to stand, but it's very solid.

Despite the onset of winter and evictions from increasingly problematic public camps. Occupy's evolution to the next phase of organizing is already underway. National debate remains firmly based on the 1% -99% split. The demand for more economic equality has sunk the debt and deficit decoy the Republicans have been hiding behind for so long. The charge of criminal fiscal irresponsibility in high places is sticking. The 1% stole our dream and threw us out of our own houses and jobs. They must be made accountable, and they must make amends. The first steps they should take are seeing to it that unemployment insurance and the payroll tax cut get extended, with no hostage taking allowed. We the 99% must demand that they do the right thing about it right now.

I went into the city(NY)with my younger brother a few days ago- Brought a few jars of peanut butter,tea bags, aa batteries and some other stuff- Although the compassion & enthusiasm hasnt waned, I think the weather has thinned out many of the freedom fighters- anyway Heres a good site -shows the various needs at different encampments- and how you can get stuff there-

A Manhattan judge refused to throw out summonses issued to dozens of protesters arrested in the Occupy Wall Street Movement that a defense lawyer said were “fixed” by the police.

Dozens of individuals charged in New York in connection with Occupy Wall Street protests against the financial industry and income inequality began to appear today in a Manhattan court for case hearings.

Martin Stolar, an attorney affiliated with the National Lawyers Guild who is representing some protesters, asked the court to dismiss the summonses, saying the police had “fixed” them. He didn’t say how they had been altered. Criminal Court Judge Neil Ross denied Stolar’s motion and also refused to hold a hearing to investigate his claims.

About 166 people are scheduled to show up in court today, while 185 more are slated to appear during the next week, Stolar said. Most of those appearing in court this week are among the 700 protesters who were arrested during an Oct. 1 demonstration on the Brooklyn Bridge, Stolar said. Most have been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
More than 1,400 people have been arrested in connection with the protests in New York since the demonstrations began on Sept. 17, including about 17 who were arrested this week after a march to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) headquarters, according to the New York City Police Department.

The protesters have said they wanted to highlight the plight of average Americans who have suffered from home foreclosures and soaring unemployment while the largest U.S. banks have recovered from the 2008 financial crisis.

Yes the arresting cop would have to show up for court probably being paid overtime to do so. The downside would be for those found guilty, they would probably receive the max sentence, but for such lame charges the worst case scenario would probably be 60 days or so I would think.

Throngs of 'Occupy' Protesters Appear in New York Courts

In Manhattan, people lined hallways and an overflow courtroom in a courthouse that handles low-level offenses, with some defendants and supporters wearing their Occupy Wall Street allegiance on buttons -- and in one case, a hand-painted oxford shirt. Many had been arrested on the bridge after police said protesters ignored warnings not to leave a pedestrian path and go onto the roadway.

The demonstrators were generally charged with disorderly conduct and blocking traffic, both violations. Nearly 60 percent took a judge's offer Wednesday to get their cases dismissed if they avoid getting arrested again for six months.

That made sense to Mark Pruce, who'd gotten up at 4:30 a.m. to get to court from his home in rural Millerton, N.Y., about 100 miles and $45 in trains and subways away.
Like many others arrested, he said he hadn't heard any police warnings and thought officers were letting the demonstrators go onto the road. But the freelance graphic and web designer, 24, said it would be difficult for him to return to court repeatedly to fight the case.

Some others told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Neil Ross they wanted trials.
Amanda Geraci, 29, said it would be a pain to come back to court from her home in Philadelphia. But she turned down the dismissal deal, partly because she didn't like the condition of staying out of trouble for six months.
"I'm not going to have something over my head from a justice system I didn't do anything wrong against," she said after court.

A protest by the OWS Health Action General Assembly will take place at St. Vincent’s hospital this Saturday to demonstrate the growing frustration with a system that values luxury condominiums over care for the sick. The OWS Health Action General Assembly is composed of patients, nurses, social workers, physicians, and regular citizens coming together to seek alternatives to the present healthcare system.

We realize that the present healthcare, housing, and food crisis can no longer be solved by the ‘experts’ and ‘professionals’ only. It requires a much broader participation of citizens in order to succeed with any long-lasting alternatives. We are living in an era of created scarcity despite the abundance of technology, resources, and production at our disposal. This inequality present in our current healthcare system serves the interest of the few while leaving millions suffering.

While Wall Street got bailed out, 6 million homes have been foreclosed since 2007, 1.6 million teenagers must live on the streets, and 50 million Americans must exist with no access to healthcare. The Occupy Wall Street movement has unleashed a wave of protests and assemblies confronting the failures of the present financial system; the gross inequalities which exist within the US healthcare system are a direct result of a structure that values the profits of the 1% over the financial and physical well-being of the 99%.

A Message Of Solidarity From Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Sisters and Brothers, I greet you in the Name of Our Lord and in the bonds of common friendship and struggle from my homeland of South Africa. I know of your own challenges and of this appeal to Trinity Church for the shelter of a new home and I am with you! May God bless this appeal of yours and may the good people of that noble parish heed your plea, if not for ease of access, then at least for a stay on any violence or arrests.

Yours is a voice for the world not just the neighborhood of Duarte Park. Injustice, unfairness, and the strangle hold of greed which has beset humanity in our times must be answered with a resounding, "No!" You are that answer. I write this to you not many miles away from the houses of the poor in my country. It pains me despite all the progress we have made. You see, the heartbeat of what you are asking for--that those who have too much must wake up to the cries of their brothers and sisters who have so little--beats in me and all South Africans who believe in justice.

Trinity Church is an esteemed and valued old friend of mine; from the earliest days when I was a young Deacon. Theirs was the consistent and supportive voice I heard when no one else supported me or our beloved brother Nelson Mandela. That is why it is especially painful for me to hear of the impasse you are experiencing with the parish. I appeal to them to find a way to help you. I appeal to them to embrace the higher calling of Our Lord Jesus Christ--which they live so well in all other ways--but now to do so in this instance...can we not rearrange our affairs for justice sake? Just as history watched as South Africa was reborn in promise and fairness so it is watching you now.

In closing, be assured of my thoughts and prayers, they are with you at this very hour.
