Wall Street Bull Barricades Remain Up

More than a month after Occupy Wall Street activists were removed from a Manhattan park, the bronze bull where the movement started is still surrounded by police barricades — and some New Yorkers want them down.

Demonstrators Return To Zuccotti

Protesters occupied New Year’s Eve inside Zuccotti Park late Saturday, creating a steel mountain of NYPD barricades in its plaza as thousands of cops were busy protecting Times Square.

The return of the 99% came about 90 minutes before midnight, with the demonstrators taking down the dozens of steel barricades set up around the park since their Nov. 15 eviction.

“We decided to build a mountain out of them,” said Jesse LaGreca, a blogger from Astoria, Queens, who came to the park. “It’s absurd to block people out of a public park.

“People are here to celebrate. We’re going to party, have fun, sing, dance.”

Protesters carrying an American flag — its stars replaced by corporate logos — scaled the pile of toppled barriers as the crowd cheered its approval.

Once they regained control of the park, the demonstrators unveiled a huge hand-painted sign reading, “OCCUPY WALL STREET.”

A projector beamed the same message several stories up on the side of a nearby building, along with a second communique: “Happy New Year.”

Occupy Wall Street's Livestream Operators Arrested

Occupy Wall Street is in the middle of one of its day-long marches in New York Tuesday, protesting the National Defense Authorization Act, but for those following along on the Global Revolution livestream, the real action is happening in the broadcast studio itself. That's because police have apparently just raided the Brooklyn studio of Globalrevolution.tv and taken some of the project's key volunteers into custody.

The raid Tuesday follows a notice to vacate that police delivered to the Bushwick studio on Monday night . Victoria Sobel, a Global Revolution volunteer, said Vlad Teichberg and a guy named Spike, both of whom maintain the live feed aggregator, had been taken into custody by police, along with four or five others.

If you were following along earlier today, you may have been startled at about 1:45 p.m. to see the live feed cut away from the street-level action and to the face of Vlad Teichberg, one of the main organizers of Global Revolution. The new shot showed a large, graffittied space where Teichberg and a couple of colleagues were confronting a man they identified as the landlord, who had apparently broken in their door. They put the camera on him, he threatened to call the police, they said he had no right to come into the space by force, and he eventually left.

But Sobel said that was just the start of the day's conflict. Shortly after the confrontation, the police arrived. "Within the past hour, the police came in and removed people that were inside the studio," she said. "I believe the police just began knocking on the door and saying they would kick the door down and saying they would arrest people on the spot." The Global Revolution studio is now locked, Sobel said. The live feed has finished its Hawaiian broadcast and is playing a pre-recorded video. "The message is that even if they take the space, the [broadcast] will continue to be maintained," Sobel said. But right now, it seems to be out of commission.

Police and buildings department officials had served the Buswhick, Brooklyn space with notices to vacate on Monday night, declaring it "imminently perilous to life."

Arrests continued, reports The Atlantic Wire's Adam Martin from Grand Central. Police apparently detained one woman, and now the stairway down to the dining concourse where police took this woman has been closed off. The group responded by chanting "the whole world is watching."

Occupy’ Movement Freezes Spending as Donations Slow

After quickly raising hundreds of thousands of dollars during its autumn protest in New York’s Zuccotti Park, Occupy Wall Street is running out of cash as donations slow to a trickle as the winter months quickly approach, writes The Wall Street Journal.

The Occupy organization, which took in $700,000 last fall, now has about $170,000. It’s main governing body, the General Assembly, voted Saturday to freeze spending on all but basic needs, such as food, clothing, and housing at several churches where demonstrations continue.

Fund raising and media attention have dried up since Occupy Wall Street was evicted from the Lower Manhattan park two months ago. The money squeeze has opened a debate within Occupy over whether the anti-corporate movement should solicit donations along traditional nonprofit lines or return to its early reliance on what one protester called “human and social capital.”

Occupy Wall Street Protester Fighting Subpoena Of Twitter Account

A writer and Occupy Wall Street activist whose tweets have become the subject of a subpoena by a New York prosecutor is seeking to quash the order in court.

A lawyer for Malcolm Harris, 23, who was arrested along with 700 protesters on the Brooklyn bridge last October, filed a motion on Monday against the subpoena, which demanded the release of all of his tweets over a three-month period.

Martin Stolar, an attorney with the National Lawyers Guild, said the use of a subpoena over a Twitter account was unprecedented, improper and an abuse of process.

"There is simply no justification for seeking such a broad swath of electronic data as part of prosecuting a minor charge related to one event on a discreet date," Stolar said. "This is yet another example of the City of New York overstepping the boundaries of the law in order to chill the legitimate political expression of critics of government policies."

Stolar said he was seeking to quash the subpoena on several grounds. He claims it did not comply with federal laws governing requests for information from electronic communication devices and had also failed to comply with procedures related to delivering a subpoena outside New York State.

The subpoena, issued to Twitter on January 26 by New York district attorney Cyrus Vance, demanded "any and all user information as well as any and all tweets posted for the period of 9/15/2011 – 12/31/2011", associated with @destructuremal , Harris's Twitter account.

Twitter has agreed not to comply with the subpoena until the outcome is decided, said Stolar, who added that he had not been told what the DA was looking for.

"My guess is they are looking for some form of incriminating statement," he said. "Three and a half months of this guy's tweets and personal records – and for what, to go fishing?"

Harris, who was charged with disorderly conduct, is one of hundreds of Occupy-related defendants whose cases are at various stages in the court system.

Feb 13 (Reuters) - Two women caught on camera being doused with pepper spray by a New York police officer during an Occupy Wall Street march in September have sued the city, saying it failed to train police officers properly.

Chelsea Elliott of Brooklyn and Jeanne Mansfield of Massachusetts filed the lawsuit last week in Manhattan federal court against Bologna, the city, the police department and other unidentified officers.

Bologna was docked 10 vacation days for "using pepper spray outside of department guidelines," police said in October.

The Manhattan district attorney's office opened an investigation into his conduct but has not released any results. A spokeswoman for the office declined to comment on Monday.

Aymen Aboushi, the lawyer for the two women, said he waited several months for the investigation to conclude before filing the suit.

"We've given them more than enough time to follow up on this," he said.

A spokeswoman for the city's law department said in an e-mail on Monday that the city had not received a copy of the lawsuit but would review it upon its arrival.

Call for Mass Action against the Suppression of the Occupy Movement

NEW YORK--(ENEWSPF)--February 26, 2012. Supporters of the Occupy Movement, including the Rev. Stephen Phelps, Senior Minister at Riverside Church, civil liberties attorney Norman Siegel and musician Peter Yarrow will join Wall Street occupiers Tuesday in Union Square in response to a call for “mass action against the suppression of the Occupy Movement.” The Bloomberg administration directed the NYPD to forcibly evict Occupy Wall Street from Zuccotti Park in November. Coordinated evictions of Occupy encampments in most U.S. cities followed.

A Parks permit has been granted for Union Square, but the 13th Precinct of the NYPD has not yet given a permit for sound at the rally.

The Call for Mass Action against the Suppression of the Occupy Movement , says, “The state planned and unleashed naked and systematic violence and repression against people attempting to exercise rights that are supposed to be legally guaranteed. This response by those who wield power in this society is utterly shameful from a moral standpoint, and thoroughly illegitimate from a legal and political one.”

1000 have joined in calling for, including Cornel West, who led Occupy Wall Street to protest the NYPD “stop and frisk” policy; Scott Olsen, the Iraq veteran who was shot in the head by the Oakland police in October; Boots Riley of The Coup; former poet laureate of the United States and U.C. Berkeley professor Robert Hass;, writers Chris Hedges and Rebecca Solnit; attorneys Michael Ratner and Gideon Oliver.

Travis Morales, an organizer of the rally, said today, “Now, after these evictions and mass arrests, we’re seeing in the press lies about violence, drugs, filth and crime in the Occupy movement used to justify police brutality and destroy Occupy’s widespread public support. On February 28 we are calling on thousands to come out publicly say “We Stand with Occupy” and oppose this suppression. We have seen historically that movements grow, and can only grow, by answering repression with even greater and more powerful mobilization.”

Occupy Wall Street Targets Pfizer As Part Of #F29 Shut Down Corporations

NEW YORK — A protester has been arrested after a noisy Occupy Wall Street march in Manhattan grew to about 200 people.

There was a heavy police presence around the 42nd Street area as the demonstration began Wednesday morning outside the Pfizer (FY'-zur) offices.

The event featured loud drumming and a chant: "The people united will never be defeated."

Other chants included an obscenity aimed at both corporate America and the police.

The group eventually marched in the rain to Bryant Park, where "teach-ins" were held.

The arrested protester had ridden his bike on the sidewalk outside the New York Public Library.

Participants included a retired garment manufacturer, 68-year-old Michael Miller of Manhattan. He complained that he has to get prescription drugs from Canada to save money.

The NYC DA’s office has sent subpoenas to Twitter asking for the data of a handful of people arrested last year as part of the Occupy Wall Street protests. Twitter has been sending those users the text of the subpoenas via email.

Jeff Rae, an Occupier who received one of those emails, decided to publish it online.

“We are writing to inform you that Twitter has received legal process. . .requesting information regarding your Twitter account, @jeffrae ,” reads the email. “The legal process requires Twitter to produce documents related to your account.”

In the email, Twitter goes on to notify Rae that the company will respond to New York’s subpoena in seven days, unless he notifies Twitter that he intends to “quash” the legal process. It also suggests that Rae “may wish” to speak with a lawyer about the matter.

Attached to Twitter’s email was the subpoena itself, in which Twitter is “commanded” to hand over “all public tweets” from mid-September to the end of October of last year. The subpoena also requires Twitter to provide the name, address, session records, telephone number and temporary IP addresses associated with Rae’s account.

Rae, an organizer and labor activist, was arrested last October along with hundreds of other protesters when Occupy Wall Street attempted to cross the vehicle roadway of New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. He was charged with blocking traffic, improper use of a roadway and failure to obey orders.

Rae told Mashable that he’s going to file a motion against the DA’s request. Rae pointed out that all of his tweets are public, but he’s concerned that the second part of the subpeona, which demands information not publicly available, has negative implications for free speech.

The New York County District Attorney’s Office has declined to comment.

Twitter has complied with similar legal motions in the past. Earlier this month, they gave Boston’s District Attorney the data of a user who allegedly hacked the Boston Police Department

Occupy Wall Street Celebrates Six Months

On Saturday, six months after the protesters first took over Zuccotti Park near the city's financial district, the protesters gathered there again, drawing slogans in chalk on the pavement and waving flags as they marched through lower Manhattan.
With the barricades that once blocked them from Wall Street now removed, the protesters streamed down the sidewalk and covered the steps of the Federal Hall National Memorial. There, steps from the New York Stock Exchange and standing at the feet of a statue of George Washington, they danced and chanted, "We are unstoppable."
Police say arrests had been made, but they don't have a full count yet.

Scores Arrested as the Police Clear Zuccotti Park

Scores of Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested on Saturday night as police officers swept Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan and closed it.

Dozens of demonstrators sat down and locked arms as officers moved in about 11:30 p.m. The protesters chanted “we are not afraid” as the police began pulling people from the crowd, one by one, and leading them out of the park in handcuffs.

The operation occurred after hundreds of people had gathered in the financial district to observe the founding of Occupy Wall Street six months ago. Earlier, protesters had embarked upon a winding march, during which police officers made initial arrests of about a dozen people near the park.

By 11:30 p.m., as police officers massed on Broadway, a commander announced that the park was closed. Those inside shouted back that the park was obliged to remain open. The commander then announced that anyone who remained inside would be arrested and charged with trespassing.

After clearing the park, police officers and private security guards began placing a ring of metal barricades on the park’s perimeter, as those who had been arrested were placed inside a city bus.

At one point, a woman who appeared to be suffering from seizures flopped on the ground in handcuffs as bystanders shouted for the police to remove the cuffs and provide medical attention.

For several minutes the woman lay on the ground as onlookers made increasingly agonized demands. Eventually, an ambulance arrived and the woman was placed inside.

By 12:20 a.m., a line of police officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.

Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried t0 walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,” he said.

At the beginning of the afternoon, as protesters gathered under blue skies while carrying banners and signs, the day was in some ways reminiscent of the first time the Occupy protesters gathered in mid-September.

Just after 1 p.m., brandishing placards with messages like “Take back government from corporations,” the crowd left Zuccotti Park headed south on Broadway, chanting the now familiar slogan “We are the 99 percent.”

When the first protesters set foot in the financial district six months ago, few people imagined what would follow, including a two-month encampment in Lower Manhattan, similar camps in cities across the country and critiques of corporate greed becoming part of the national dialogue.

The movement was mainly quiet during the winter, but organizers said they were aiming for a springtime resurgence.

“It’s just a reminder that we’re here,” Brendan Burke said, as the crowd marched past the New York Stock Exchange . “It’s an opportunity to remind Wall Street that we aren’t going anywhere.”

In several respects, the march on Saturday was similar to the inaugural one. The crowd was on the small side but spirited and marched past the bronze sculpture of a bull at Bowling Green, which had served as a mustering spot for the first march. The marchers were accompanied by police officers on foot and on scooters who at one point blocked access to Wall Street, just as they did on Sept. 17.

And, as they did that day, the marchers made sudden turns that appeared to surprise the police and walked along Wall Street for at least a brief time.

At one point, several demonstrators stood on the steep steps of Federal Hall and chanted “1-2-3-4, I declare class war.”

Later, members of the group ignored orders from the police to remain on sidewalks and flowed onto parts of Exchange Place and Beaver Street. Later, on Broad Street, a deputy inspector turned to a sergeant and said, “We got to start collaring some.”

For the next 30 minutes or so, things remained calm as marchers stuck to the sidewalks and entered Zuccotti Park.

But then, just after 2 p.m., police officers began telling a large group of protesters that they could not stand on the sidewalk on a stretch of Liberty Street. Officers pushed the crowd until more than 100 protesters on the sidewalk were pressed against a wall that borders the park.

Then the police began grabbing and arresting people, taking into custody at least half a dozen. Officers surged into the crowd, dragging protesters toward the street, as people yelled objections.

“They were grabbing people randomly,” Zachary Kamel said, adding that his girlfriend, Lauren DiGoia, had been arrested while dancing on the sidewalk.

One sergeant grabbed a woman wearing a green shirt by the bottom of her throat and shoved her head against the hood of a car. A moment later, another officer approached and forcefully pressed her head against the car before placing her into the back of a police truck.

Over the next few hours, protesters conducted meetings inside Zuccotti Park and held a dance party fueled by a saxophone and a battery of drums. Sporadic moments of tension also arose.

At one point, the police arrested a handful of protesters on Cedar Street near Trinity Place. A few moments later, near Cedar Street and Broadway, a police captain pushed a man by the shoulders for almost a block, then released him when a crowd loudly demanded to know whether the man was under arrest.

The man, Charlie Gonzalez, 31, said that the captain had told him he was not permitted to stand on the sidewalk.

About an hour later, the same captain pushed another man several hundred feet east down Cedar Street, about a block from Zuccotti Park, and briefly detained him there.

That man, Yoni Miller, 19, said he was counting officers standing in rows near Broadway when the captain forced him to walk around a corner onto Cedar Street, then asked him if he was a terrorist or was planning any crimes.

Paul Moore, 25, said that he was videotaping the encounter when the captain asked him for identification and began pushing him away, telling him he was not permitted to document what was happening.

After nightfall, the number of people inside the park swelled to more than 500.

About 10 p.m., some of those in the park began a regimen of running and dancing that they called “spring training,” which they said was meant to prepare for coming demonstrations.
