I think this statement from the article is a false assessment. It is essential for belief to be consistent with mission. Many beliefs would present objections of conscience in rank and file.

You don't make a policeman out of someone who has the belief that all crimes warrant capital punishment. It is legitimate to question these kinds of attitudes
considering access to lethal force.

You guys are right, of course belief is highly important to being a good soldier, but belief in this context has nothing to do with spirituality. I'm much less willing to bend my ideals than most christians I know, probably because god will forgive them anyway, or something. I'm an idealist, and do NOT compromise. The military, in this case, is acting on the idea that you need religion to know what's right and wrong, it's the whole "if you're athiest, you obviously have no moral objections to raping babies and torching preschools, because jesus saying those are wrong is the only reason I personally don't do them"

 

I'm as sure, as the millions of American Christians are, that if only Jesus knew the irredeemable evil of the scores of countries the Jewnighted States has invaded, bombed, or militarily attacked in some other fashion, he would have done exactly the same. :army:
