As for techniques, the way that I meditate is to simply experience life. To stop your connection to your sense organs, and perceive your thoughts rising and falling without being attached to them. At least, that's how I started.

As for what Om is, the simple answer is that Om is the stage of creation between gross matter and the light (or fire) of creation. Perceiving Om through sound is typically the easiest because sound vibration is something we can manipulate readily. But Om is perceptible through all five senses because it is the life breath of existence itself.
Om and Aum are not different, in fact that are just different translations of the original sanskrit. While Aum is how the sound is more phonetically proper, and described the Trimurti, Om is what is believed to be the true translation.

That is a simple answer. The real nature of Om can only be experienced transcendentally and comes of it's own accord by dissolving your awareness into Brahma.

From the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali :
"Tasya vacakah pranavah" means "Gods voice is Om"
An organic drone as I call it. Bells of joy ringing in every totality of creation. The sound your head makes on psychedelic drugs. The voice of someone you love. The pulsing energy which sustains all life, though it is both pulsing and a single steady flowing stream. God breathes Om, Om breathes Mother Nature, Mother Nature breathes you! And every breath in is life, as every breath out is death. Attachment and letting go and so on and so forth.
    God Bless +
