Well, you know, I had two friends that died quite young last year from diseases that were caused by smoking. I used to tell them if they didn't quit, it was gonna kill 'em. It did. I used to smoke, and quitting was the best thing that ever happened to me. I think it is a destructive, unhealthy addiction. Having said that, I'm not in favor of giving the government ANY more control over people's lives. It is a VERY dangerous trend. The government is already obsessed with telling us what we can say, look at, put in our bodies, and on and on. I'm totally fed up with it. And it just keeps getting more authority to do so with very little opposition. Besides, mandating separate smoking and non-smoking areas in restaurants is a completely adequate way of dealing with the issue. To do anything beyond that is just re-asserting the government's control over exactly how you live your life, and creating an even bigger money-making bureaucracy to enforce more laws. Fuck the government.
Okay folks, let me spell this out for ya in simple terms....I am in no way for prohibition, I am a smoker too! What I'm trying to point out is this...we all know that smoking is not healthy, if WE choose to inhale smoke, then WE should do it in a way that does not bother those people who choose NOT to smoke. If all smokers had the common courtesy to refrain from smoking indoors, we wouldn't be having this debate, would we? "respect me, it's the law".....I said nothing about a law, I'm talking about thinking of someone else for a change, something we as a society know little about most of the time. We like to talk a big fight, about peace and love, put some money in the red kettles for those less fortunate, save the whales, don't wear fur, bla bla bla....WHAT? YOU WANT ME TO GO OUTSIDE TO SMOKE SO YOUR BABY ISN'T BREATHING MY 2ND HAND SMOKE? WELL, I NEVER. I HAVE RIGHTS, THIS IS A FREE COUNTRY! When our selfish vices get the better of us, all those warm fuzzy feelings go right down the crapper, don't they?? Oh, and Gardener...the lil girl that scolded you was wrong. I don't think her momma taught her any manners.
What BelladonnaBlue said is right-it ought to be about caring about other people, being concerned about not bothering them-not about passing more damned LAWS!
I stand corrected. forget about changing minds, it's all about forcing a change of behaviour now. we choose... we should... common courtesy... thinking of someone else... we as a society... It's a Brave New World, aint it? legislating morality as well as personal habits? again, non-smokers have a choice as well: they don't like the atmosphere at an establishment (smoking, drinking, bad music, bad food ect), they don't have to seek employment at or give their business to that establishment. free will, free association if a bowling alley allows indoor smoking and you do not want to be around second hand smoke here's a good suggestions: go to another bowling alley! hell, start up your own business that doesnt allow indoor smoking! but what do they do instead, the tell a business owner(who might or might not want to run a smoke-free establishment and are perfectly able to run their business smoke-free if they want) no smoking, they tell employees(who might or might not want to work at a smoke-free establishment and are perfectly able to seek employment at smoke-free establishment if they want) no smoking, they tell customers(who might or might not want to give their business to a smoke-free establishment and are perfectly able to give their business to another establishment that is smoke-free if they want) no smoking. It's not my responsibility to ensure someone's baby has clean air, it's the parents! Why are they taking a baby into a smoke filled room?!!? And i don't give a shit about whales, fur, or peace on earth. I care about having the freedom to make my own decisions, and live with the consequences of those decisions. "I said nothing about a law" No but in a thread about anti-smoking legislation you did cheer on a 16 year old who stated: there is freedom, and then there is respect. unfortunately the latter is lacking so the former has to be limited. Horseshit! I would rather die from a stupid mistake than be denied the chance to make that mistake.
that bites ass man i smoke 2 but i live in texas like eddie izards say "no smoking in bars and soon no drinking and no talking" this country is getting more fucked up every time i turn around we live her for our freedom not to be controled every time we turn a corner this goverment is so controling but atleast were not living in a comunisit place like cuba so i guess we just need to look at the bright side and if it bugs u move here to texas half the cops a croked any ways lol

Fuck that, I don't feel like smoking outside when it's -10 ( celsius people ), actually, the only time I enjoy smoking outside is when the temperature is 20 and above, otherwise I'll enjoy smoking inside my friend's house or mine. What's with the " take it outside " attitude? Huh? Fuck that, I'm not going to freeze my ass off just because the government says I can't smoke in my apartment, which I PAY FOR ( As I've said, in Canada they're trying to ban smoking in apartment buildings ). As far as thinking about others, until I know who those others are, I don't give a rat's ass, this whole continent is about putting yourself first, and respecting your friends, nothing else. BTW, I myself don't care about peace and I love fur, so yeah.
Not at all, Shane, just don't have the room in my life to deal with a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears 21 year olds. There are much better topics to discuss here, with better people, who don't feel the world revolves around them and their cigarettes. (For the rest of you who read this, I'm not easily provoked, but I can be a bitch with the best of 'em, LOL)
wet-behind-the-ears 21 year olds... I guess that's supposed to support a position? I think it would be obvious from my posts that i believe the issue is bigger than cigarettes (either way the thread is about cigarettes, so what else would we be discussing?). And BTW: This wet-behind-the-ears 21 year old father of two has probably dealt with more shit in his life than your entire extended family, so cut back on the condescension...
The position I support is those of us who smoke being more considerate to those who don't smoke. Simple as that. And, BTW, we've all gone through a lot of shit in our lives. Calm down, Francis.
And mine is that it is dangerous to turn should be into have to be by law(which is the topic of the thread). As soon as i stated such, you decided that you don't "have the room in my life to deal with a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears 21 year olds" and that "There are much better topics to discuss here, with better people, who don't feel the world revolves around them and their cigarettes." Telling me to calm down when your panties got twisted... exactly: and who the hell is Francis?
LOL! But you're still championing for the rights of all of us, nothing wrong with that. This is the last day I can smoke at work, I should just quit, but damnit, I like to smoke! Hey, I just read your page, that song is great. Very wise words, my man.unk: So, apology accepted? Happy New Year!
Don't give in to those nicotine patches and that gum, if you do then you'll be hooked on that, happened to a friend of mine. Best way to quit is to have an exhorbant amount of sex to help forget about smoking. Maybe you already knew that but I always try to help in some way because if you want to quit you should.
