The bans have been in place in California for a long time. That's not enough for the new control type mentality, now we have employers that won't hire smokers even though the smokers don't smoke on company time, we have apartments and homeowners that won't rent to smokers. This is a legal substance. We don't have landlords asking if you are a drug user or pedophile, in fact in the workplace one of those abuses is given protected status and employees are given free intervention most times. What's the big bug a boo about smoking have we indocrinated a couple generations where the use of a legal substance is worse than other abuses. Seems off the wall to me. People/non smokers have reached a point where they are no longer considerate and just plain rude and overbearing. They practice indiscrimate sex sometimes but they afraid of a few fumes. We see ads on tv for herpes medications so those infected can continue to relate to the rest of the world, but if you smoke you better be prepared to be ostrasized. These people don't have barbecues, light bonfires, have fireplaces or woodstoves? They've never gone to a cigar bar? They never take their asthmatic kids to wienie roasts? What is it they are afraid of..... tobacco cooties? You have to be exposed to a great deal of secondhand smoke before it could ever affect your health unless your breathing is already impaired in which case you shouldn't be hanging out with smokers anyway. Statistics have been inflated so that hospitals and medical services can receive more of the taxes collected from the sales of tobacco, not good science. If a person breaks a leg and they mention during the health history that they smoke, it goes down as smoking related.
I was thinking along the lines of Switzerland, you see, I've been to the Yukon ( which is pretty damn close to Alaska and as far as I know from people I met in the Yukon it's basically the same ) and there's nothing real fresh about the cities, or better put towns. The air is more so colder than it is fresh, Switzerland on the other hand isn't all that cold up in the mountains and you actually feel better with every breath you take up there. You have to understand that it doesn't matter how healthy you are, any day can be your last.
Well stated, Gardener. BTW, which abuse is the one they are protecting? My guess is it's either marijuana or heroin as those are the ones that seem to get the most press, but I'm just guessing on that.
our air is very nice. maybe it's better in switzerland. but it's pretty good. this is a small town, maybe 700 people, and the houses are spread far apart. i know that i could die at any moment. but i haven't yet, and i don't really get any happiness from the things that would shorten my lifespan anyway... i'm not paranoid, and i'm not rude to people who smoke smoking around me. i know all a few minutes in a room with a smoker will do is make me stink. and i know someone could push a safe off a 10-story building as i'm passing underneith, or i could get hit by a car (actually, i never walk by big buildings or around cars very much, but you understand)... but let's say that doesn't happen. i'd like to live as long as possible, and i'd like to be as happy as i can be. i know there are things all around me that are killing me slowly. just sitting in front of this computer isn't the best thing in the world. but i've found my balance... everyone else has found their own balance... and we all should respect that. so if someone wants to eat whatever tastes good and never read a food label, or wants to sit on a sidewalk breathing in exhaust from cars going by, or smoke crack every day, whatever... that's fine... as long as we don't barge into other people's balance bubbles
here's a list of just a few of the harsh chemicals found in cigarette smoke: http://www.smoke-free.ca/Health/Healtheffectssmoke.htm no wonder my eyes water, itch, and turn red when i'm around smokers. by the way, second-hand smoke is worse than mainstream smoke (smoke inhaled through the cigarette/filter)*. also, the toxic particles settle into material surfaces (e.g. clothing, furniture, etc) and remain there for long periods, during which time they are still very harmful to the health of humans and animals. * http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/servlet/ContentServer?cid=1001925&pagename=CHN-RCS/CHNResource/FAQCHNResourceTemplate&c=CHNResource%E2%8C%A9=En oops, one more thing: there is no safe level of second hand smoke. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/c...eneral_No_Safe_Level_for_Secondhand_Smoke.asp
Exactly, now I'm confused, are you for the ban or not? You seemed for the ban and now you're all for giving people their own space.
Well sure Pris, here ya go...:001_icon1 Here's a big smooch from me(OMG, I'm old enough to be your mamma!) Happy New Year everyone. Me and my smoking buddy are going to get chinese for lunch and smoke some cigs. Today is the first day of the tobacco ban at my work. It sucks!:hysterica
Honestly, I would be extremely happy about this ban. I am HIGHLY sensitive to tobacco smoke and if someone in the vicinity is either smoking or has been recently, my eyes water so much that it looks as if my dog died and I literally can't breathe. So, essentially, it's very hard just to go out because even passing by a smoker on the street can cause me to well up. I have other friends who get asthma attacks if they have to walk by someone smoking. Living in Boston where you have to walk everywhere, this can be a real problem. I have nothing against smokers. I just would like to be able to go out without worrying that I'll have a coughing fit and end up with a sore throat the next day.
SilverClover, did you ever bother to think that urban air pollution might also be a contributing factor? I guess it's just easier to blame the smokers. If your concerned about asthma problems, Boston might not be the best place to live. But at least it's better than Los Angeles.
