https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Australia 5 since 2011, not many people killed though. So that 295+ million difference doesn't do very much for you, huh?
Since I have you here, don't mean to go off topic, but I posted in another thread and then tried to delete it. Is there an option I'm just not seeing?
I fixed it. BTW, I crunched the numbers for you on crime rates. Based on your numbers, the population ratio comes out to 13.826 so the US could only have 69 mass killings during that same time period to have the same rate for that particular crime. Balbus has already posted our numbers, and they're a hell of a lot higher than that. So, Australia is getting much better results for their efforts. The numbers don't lie. They're kicking our ass.
Firearm-related deaths rate per 100,000 population. US –2011 - 10.3 Australia – 1.02 England and Wales – 0.22 France - 3.00 Germany – 1.10 Switzerland - 3.04 Homicides by any method per 100.000 US - : 5.1 Australia – 1.6 England and Wales - 1.03 France : 1.2 Germany 0.8 Switzerland 0.57 Gun related homicides per 100,000 US 2011: 3.6 Australia – 0.14 England and Wales: 0.06 France - 0.22 Germany - 0.2 Switzerland 0.16
Ghost Yes but what do you base you views on - the belief you are right whatever the statistical evidence, anecdotal evidence or…well what? I mean can you please explain in more detail why you are disregarding this evidence? So why do you think more people are murdered (or harmed) with guns in the US than in other developed countries (see statistics above)?
Statistics can be manipulated, bent, interpreted. I never trust a statistic that I haven't manipulated myself. Two reasons: tons of guns around and the whole gun culture to support that.
Ghost What is your evidence that these figures have been manipulated? So you do think there is a correlation so why did you suggest there was none?
I wholly support the strict firearms control in New Jersey and in New York. Here death is dealt daily from illegal weapons from handguns not assault weapons. When police in Newark, NJ did the dirty work of stopping cars, looking for guns; it was the Justice Dept. who stepped in to stop it saying that the stops were driven by race. When our government stops its posturing, and gets serious about street guns When this political posing is joined by resolve then I will be on board.
What is your evidence they have not been manipulated? I never suggested that. I only pointed out that in a domestic violence situation it don't matter as much.
Comparing Australia to the US isn't proper... Australia has strict gun laws, and few mass shootings. If Australia can pass such laws as they have now recently done, I believe we can do the same to ensure public safety and some sense of sanity. From Wikipedia: None of my friends in OZ complain about this. My time (6 months) in Queensland was spent remarkably peacefully and I certainly didn't miss the random gunfire one hears in the distance at all times of the day and night in this country.
Ghost Because they seem to be correctly done and I can’t see any evidence they have been manipulated or find anyone saying they have been - so again can you please present your evidence that they have been manipulated? But it does matter as you seemed to agree? The presence of guns in such situations would seem to make the likelihood of harm and even death more likely, I mean where is you evidence to the contrary?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJJZLwkcEhU I couldn't decide whether or not to put this here or the Brexit thread. I think there's plenty of relevance for it here. He sums up the dangers of a politically correct world that has been forced upon us by the left.
6 We have already covered what is being said in the video To repeat, I think you need to do a bit of studying as Bill has pointed out the EU vote will have little impact on Muslim migration to the UK. Britain gets few Muslim immigrants from the EU. Actually I believe it is the Polish that seem to be the largest group of immigrants into the UK from the EU followed by the Irish. As to the whole assimilation thing has been covered elsewhere http://www.hipforums.com/forum/topic/475997-whats-assimilation/ To repeat a post I wrote there – It seems to me that for some the debate is not about the possibility of assimilation but about the impossibility of some groups to assimilate as an argument to exclude them from migration into their countries. So its exclusion not inclusion that they seem to desire. Also people have rightly asked what is meant by assimilation anyway – I’m a left wing atheist if I move into an area that is predominately religious and conservative do I have to blend in and drop my views and if I don’t is there a punishment? And of course what about vice versa? I’d also bring up the point of battling ideals in a free society if people are not attracted to the ideals of a place what does that say about the attractiveness of those ideals. Again - Milo yiannopolis seems a bit of a dick so I’m not exactly going to just accept his ‘statistics’. Maybe you should read around – As a gay British Muslim, this is what I think of the poll finding over half of UK Muslims want homosexuality banned http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/as-a-gay-british-muslim-this-is-what-i-think-of-the-survey-finding-over-half-of-british-muslims-want-a6978881.html Queer and going to the mosque: 'I’ve never felt more Muslim than I do now' http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/jun/03/unity-mosque-queer-muslim-islam-samra-habib
Awesome update Balbus... It amazes me what gets quoted in the mass media as truth when the reality points otherwise. Folks like you keep us on our toes, many thanks! This thread has kept me informed as to what is really going on... my other friends there are too self-obsessed to see what is going on outside their pub crawling area.
