In a letter to foreign secretary Liz Truss, IDC chair Sarah Champion said that the support of up to £1.5m announced last week amounts to less than 5p for each person affected by extreme rainfall which has destroyed at least 700,000 homes.

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are making their final attempts to win over undecided Tory party members in the last live hustings of the contest to become Conservative leader and prime minister.

The event, at Wembley Arena, hosted by LBC, is being closely watched to see which candidate is likely to gain the confidence of those who have not yet cast their votes. Voting closes at 5pm on Friday and the results of the contest will be announced on Monday.

Earlier, Boris Johnson said the next prime minister would “unquestionably” have another package to help households with the cost of living crisis.
“I understand the anxiety people have about the cost of food and the way it’s been increasing,” he said.

“Food, like so many other products, is basically being driven by the spike in the cost of energy and I really, really understand why people are anxious about it.”

He added: “Every household, 29 million households, will get £400 in October, every pensioner in the country will get £300 in November, everybody who’s entitled to disability benefits gets £150. But don’t forget that when the handover comes, the next prime minister is unquestionably going to have another package to help.”
