definitely. the book especially is so overrated that it makes me laugh. of course, the one and only argument you'll get from somebody is that you "just didn't get it." there's nothing to get!! he wrote this stupid story (may he rest in peace) in a couple of days while cooped up in a hotel room...and it shows. it sucks! another recent movie that just came into my head is "Crash". give me a break. i haven't seen a movie try so hard since "Magnolia"...
fear and loathing is hilarious, for me at least. Lizard Queen: If you see this, i want you to know that your sign warms my heart
I loved fear and Loathing in Las vegas. Both the book and the movie, I can't even explain my love for it. I am so ashamed. Sin City fucking sucked, I have no idea why people liked that movie, people just died all the time, it made the story line blow. If that movie is so much like the comics than I have no interest in the comics.
Yes to Napolean Dynamite (if the characters aren't appealling, why stick around to see if they triumph at the end?). I'll add Casablanca to this list. I love older movies (e.g. All About Eve, Double Indemnity, The Thin Man), but what is the big deal with this movie? "Round up the usual suspects." How did that get to be a famous quote, anyway?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Silence of the Lambs Pretty much anything with Anthony Hopkins in it The Wall. Pink Floyd was an okay band, but that movie was completely horrible and patheticly stupid. It's insane how unbelievably bad that movie was. And all the fans are like "omg omg you don't like it that must mean you don't get it". No, I got it very well and pretty much it was awful.
donnie darko for sure, that movie licked balls...i sat there and watched it and what the hell, too gay of a movie. blow was definetley a kickass movie. as for fear and loathing....my opinion is...its overrrated if your sober, i really only liekt hat movie when im good 'n' fucked up.
"Closer", most definately. All the characters are emotionless and robotlike, occasionally sputtering contrived little oh-so-quotable soundbites. The plot is reasonably clever, but because of the way the characters are drawn, you just don't care about them. They just swear a lot in the hope that that will make the film cutting edge.
IronGoth is right. Easy Rider is THE most overrated movie ever. Also Phone Booth, I don't see why so many ppl liked it. I think it was kinda lame...
to defend Easy Rider, it is a generational thing, y'all are under 20 and no offense is meant what so ever. (I'm a child of the 60's) In it's day it was cutting edge, few mainstream films delt with the biker/druggie culture in a "realistic" way before Easy Rider. Same thing goes with The Graduate, you don't see the big deal at it today, but in the 60's it was an eye opener, an older woman seducing a college kid. ya gotta think of the 60's culture this way, the TV show, I Dream of Jeannie, she was not allowed to show her belly button, or the old Star Trek when Kirk kissed Uhura they didn't actually kiss, they turned their heads so you couldn't see their lips and they got real close but didn't touch because he was white and she was black it is the culture of the 60's .. that is why such movies such as Easy Rider are considered classics, because they broke the mold, but yes by todays standards they are yawners. in 25-30 years, movies you think are cult classics now will be seen as overrated yawners by the under 20's then.
I think that damn Britney Spears movie (Crossroads) & Jessica Simpson in Dukes of Dazzed Ridiculously overrated. I unfortunately saw both. and neither lived up to any bit of rating in which they got.
I agree. Napoleon Dynamite was ridiculously overrated. Not sure why it's such a big hit with the 16 & under crowd, but my little sis had a sleepover recently, which i got conned into chaperoning. I thought that if I heard "freakin idiot!" one more time, i couldn't be held responsible for my actions.
I know I dont see how people saw that entertaining. I didnt think Collateral was too overrated. It didnt get a lot of hype but i thought it was a good movie too.
Agree with Napolean Dynamite (and I've really given this one a chance---been on HBO the last several months). How about Casablanca. I've watched it a couple times and barely remember it (so it didn't make much of an impression on me). Why does it keep ending up at the top of all these AFI lists (the latest one is the 101 best screenplays)?
