I'm up for a few days this Spring. Need to test my cold weather gear. Friday night I came home from work, ate some food, had a beverage (cuervo black and citrus twister) and was looking for a sil nylon and fell asleep looking at a thread on a hiker board (don't remember which) and read something neat as I fell asleep. Fast forward to Saturday, in a shopping center parking lot, staring at WalMart. I don't usually shop there, hate 'em, but something drew me in. I went past the sporting goods dept, looking at cheap trekking poles made by Swissgear and laughed at them. At the fabric dept I suddenly remembered what I was looking for. Bolts of sil nylon in the clearance bin at $1 per yard. Seven Walmarts later I have enough 1.1 oz/yard sil nylon, uncoated ripstop UV resistant nylon thread and something that is very close to what the Mithril is constructed of (ultralight sailcloth) to make a tent, a G4 pack, two cargo packs for my waistbelt and a half dozen stuff sacks. Cost? $14. Normal cost from Quest Outfitters? $160+. And I don't feel guilty because with purchase, acquisition, stocking, merchandizing and labor, WalMart took a loss on my purchase. So I got my gear and stuck it to the man all in one felled swoop. Yay me. Happy Holidays.
