dude calm down... youre proving how words have so much power right there... Its like the word "nail" which means a thing on top your finger, a tool. or i "nailed" her.. ALL of which have complete different meanings... so get the idea that i meant gay as "homosexual" out of your fuckin head man
but you must understand that he wasn't intentionally being harmful i never said he wasn't making a mistake i'm just saying your first response shouldn't be to attack him about it that's a cause of a lot of problems when someone isn't aware that they're wrong, if they're "ignorant" of it it helps to fix peoples ignorances it doesn't help to attack them about it that causes them to make them feel like they're right even more, when they're forced to defend they're opinion spread open-mindedness don't destroy it =D peace, man =)
I'm not saying you meant the word "gay" to mean the word homosexual. I'm saying the pejorative (same word in Pepsi, in case you can't work out the English version) version of the word "gay" as in "that's gay, man" is designed to infer that people who are "gay" as in homosexual, are messed up. That's where it comes from. And it's insulting to people who are gay to say that. Just as how "well, when I said he "Jew"d me out of $5 I just meant he was a chiselling thief who ripped me off. The fact that it's the same word for a group of people historically maligned in racist terms as cheap and thieving is just a coincidence!" is complete bullsh(t as well.
i'm gay, and I'm guilty for saying it. It's just a real "popular" term. I don't know, it doesn't bother me.
When you say or do something harmful, there's three possible responses. 1) Deny it (you're full of crap! N*gger is NOT an insult!) 2) Apologize (I didn't mean to say that... sorry) 3) Get more aggressive (I said N*gger cause I hate N*ggers what ya gonna do about it?) There's not much difference between 1 and 3....
Yea man I completely agree.. But you just mentionned something there that I do not like about this world we live in... If only everyone would take time to meditate and relax, and get rid of their negative egos clouding their heads... people wouldnt mind words, hek people would forget the power of words... Its just .. I know I was wrong saying the word "gay".. but when everyone around me uses it here in Montreal just to say "messed up".. (and im 100% sure they dont mean to be mean... its just the way they were taught to say "messed up".. and its shorter to say.. i kinda start saying it as well... But I really hate how we make so much importance out of everything... life is too weird and unknown to make big deals out of nothing like that
anyways.. all in all, sorry dude.. I know why you got mad at me for using "gay" in my sentence... But sincerely, I had completely forgotten it meant "homosexual" when i used it there. it just became one of my ways to say "messed up"
If i had goten in here earlier I would have posted those slurs about gypsies and Jews (I learned the history of the gypsies one from one of my high school teachers). But yeah, stebo32, you lost...big time. And teh-horace, Iron Goth didn't attack him in his first post about it, he just pointed out it was funny someone preaching tolerance used intolerant slurs PS- "gay" meaning "messed up" isn't a montreal thing, it is everywhere
um...okay? not sure i'm following i never meant to start some kind of debate i was simply saying that stebo did not intend on hurting anyone's feeling and also brought about the phenomenon of the modern language yes, it's a phenomenon, because modern language has changed, and is changing increbily fast words have a whole lot of meanings nowadays, and for some people, it's hard to follow, yes
The difference is stupidity. Person 1 is a moron. Although...it could be argued that Person 3 is a moron, but they are just moronic in a different way.
haha, yes, well i too spotted the irony and not really "attack" him i guess i should have used a better verb it just seemed to upset Iron Goth i was just tryin' to explain it meh, guess i shoulda minded my own business =P
Sorry for getting so heated, stebo. We've got rid of the overt racism. The subtler stuff is still hanging around....
Lol its funny to see someone popping out of nowhere saying "you lost".. there is no such thing as losing or winning when it comes to problems like this... Im not saying I won... its just... anyone makes out what he wants out of the universe.. you say he won because your perception of "right" in this, is the way we shouldnt make other mean words coming from homosexuality (Its alright. i dont care, thats how you perceive this topic.). but another one will perceive "being right" as saying all the insults in the world... You cant judge one's perception. cause yours is probably not the right one either. no one has the right one... life is unknown, thus all that is inside of it, is unkwnown itself. its just, I was debating my perception... probably false I know.. but its just how I see the universe... One lives its own you know.
Well...1) The reason I "popped out od nowhere" is cause i left for a few minutes to other areas of the forum and made lunch. 2) The reason I said he won/you lost is cause in the argument that was being discussed, you presented no (what I perceived) as a valid argument for the defense of using such slurs. 3) If i wanted to be a pain I would try and take the Socratic approach to what you just said about right and wrong and argue that right and wrong are definite objects, and perception doent have anything to do with that, only knowledge of what right and wrong are so technically if i possessed such knowledge, I would be correct in my assertion... blah blah blah...stupid philisophical argument
anyways. it was fun discussing .. I live having discussions like that. Now theres not really anything more to discuss about
