    Why?

I am a white guy, and I started dreading my hair about 6 months ago. I have no convictions of hypocrisy. Should I be ashamed? I don't think I should be. Dreads are more than just a fashion statement to me, and many others. I do not embrace dreadlocks as a lifestyle, but they are very much a part of my personal culture, even before I knew so.

I was born in the United States and raised in Africa by my African step family. I fell in love with the land and its people. My grandparents did not speak English, so I learned the language and soaked in the curious culture. While I was living there I had the opportunity to travel in many countries, and my identity absorbed everything I saw and interacted with. I still feel as if I understand Africans better than I do Westerners, I feel like a white African.

My parents were Christian missionaries in Africa, and I never accepted my parents' religion, but the constant distance between us gave me the time I needed to develop my own beliefs. I was surrounded by various religious influences in Africa; Islam & Christianity (the majority), Rastafarianism, Hinduism, and other traditional beliefs. From what I observed and have come to believe is truth, my values and perspectives were aligned with everything that dreadlocks stand for. I do have spiritual motives in dreading my hair.

I am not saying that any white person needs justification to wear dreadlocks, rather that justification is not necessary. We are all of one blood, skin color plays no role in the forming of soul in a free spirit!

    I see no color
    We bleed from similar veins

last time I checked Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma was one brewery, and Modelo the only other brewery that produces mass marketed Mexican beer. I'm not saying that the beers taste the same at all, I just think people should know what they're drinking ;)

A lot of people also don't know that the Paul Mitchell group bought Patron years ago and the agave plants used in the tequila production have since decreased in quality. Yet the price per bottle is high as ever.

Yeah, I actually agree with you. I have dreads, but surely they don't warrant a whole forum for discussion.

It's just an easy and convenient way for me to wear my hair. I'm not making any statement by doing so....

Besides, as I have naturally very curley hair, dreads don't even require maintainence. They are just there. And they grow. Big deal. It all seems a bit silly, people being so obsessed about their hair.

lol @ dreads becoming a trend. Geez, I fight off all the dreadheads on my walks through my town. lol

This thread is silly. I love how all these random people show up to throw some hate on the discussion and then disappear.

If it were a trend, wouldn't I see people with dreads either on tv or in my town? I have seen all of three people with dreads in my town and I have lived here for almost three years. That's one slow ass moving trend. lol

Perhaps it's a trend where you are, but it's certainly not the case anyway.

And who cares if it's a trend? There could be thousands of dreadheads and I wouldn't care. I'd be thinking.. aren't all those people smart by spending tons less time on their hair and their appearance. :)

lol... it does eh? You are terribly terribly mistaken.

Time... as in waiting months and years to have cool hair.. yes, then time. But time as in spending time on doing my hair... not at all. I don' do a thing. Nothing. Well, today I scooped up my dreadsd adn put an elastic in them, but that's it.

I think you are uneducated about dreads if you think all white people spend time working on them. All hair dreads my friend. ALL HAIR DREADS.

i think sumones right....just that sumones not admitting thier wrong.:D

it take at least a good six months in getting hair to get well dreaded and thats along time and of course you don't spend all day dreading it a matter of the finish that takes a long time.

You're making some pretty general statements. Have you met all white people? There is no way for you to know the texture of every head of hair, obviously, because my hair is nappy as hell.
