Pick or no pick?

the only difference between playing something from a tab (at least when the tabs are correct, which they are... http://www.powertabs.net , if you dont believe me) and playing something by ear is that it is much more time consuming to work out all the notes correctly when you are learning the song by ear. now just to clarify, seeing as how you are experiencing some confusion as to what purpose a tab is meant to serve, it is usually expected that the tab be identical, or at least as close as possible, to the song it is representing. I have no idea as to why you thought otherwise...
Im also not sure why you would rather learn something by ear than learn it from at tab, as the latter is much easier, alot less time consuming, and usually more accurate.
and even if I were to experience difficulty while learning a song on guitar, I can assure you that I would not deliberately cause physical harm to myself or the guitar...

 

wow, that sure is fucking stupid. Wouldn't life be wonderful if we all did everything the easiest ways possible? keep reading your tabs and see how creative you become. and by the way i can learn anything on guitar by ear just as easily since that is the only way i have ever learned anything. tabs are for lazy people who cant figure something out by themselves and dont feel like trying. and you would probably die from frustration trying to learn steve howe music by ear.

first off, you have never even heard me play...
but really, my original point was that not all styles of music can be played without a pick, and whether or not you prefer Chet Atkins over Dream Theater doesnt make a difference, you cant deny that some things are nearly impossible to play without a pick

well of course you couldnt play Sound Chaser without a pick. or, could ya? anything on accoustic guitar i could play without a pick and most electric stuff i could too, but yea thats true not all of it.
