Okay, you asked for waxy dreads...here you go

I blogged the whole process including a pic from a week ago (at 7 weeks)...you can see it here

    Getting started
    [IMG]

I waxed them 2-3x a day for almost a month. It's what I was told to do
    [IMG]

At a 4 week lock up with a crochet needle
    [IMG]

And fast forward to a month later (no wax in a month).

ok.... here goes my dread journey.

i started with a dreadheadhq kit. waste of money i now know, but i got a comb out of it that i got some good use out of, and can use later on to deflea the cat, lol. and the shampoo was okay. so not a complete and total loss.

this was right after i backcombed. i used lock peppa from dreadheadhq too, and it created a lot of breakage, but i didn't know that at the time. i tried using the wax but washed it right out because it was HORRIBLE and gross, i couldnt' stand feeling my hair like that. ugh. the ones i put the wax in, i washed it right back out of and started over, before i was even done backcombing. blech.

this is after one month... notice how straight they are. this is because i palmrolled a lot. i wouldn't recommend it if you want your locks to look natural. if you want them to look manicured, go for it. i had a job i had to look "presentable" for, so that's part of why i did it (plus i still thought that straight and rounded on the tips looked the best).

this one is at 2 months, after i freaked out that they were getting to skinny, and combined them all by threading them together in twos and threes. eek!

so here they are at 6 months, fat as all hell and full of beads and wraps and all kinds of crazy shit.

then at 11 months i decided ok, so they were too fat! the ends were all blunted, and they felt like weapons all over my head, big heavy chunks of hair waiting to stab a lover in the eye. not what i wanted anymore. so one day i started just ripping them back apart. it took forever cause i had to unweave all the weaving i'd done, and over about oh, 9 months, they got pretty locked together. it was crazy. but i'm finally really happy about my dreads. there's a couple little guys that bit the dust when i was ripping, presumable cause they were weakened by my multiple backcombings (just don't do it kids) and by the lock peppa.

but you can see in my sig pic that my dreads are getting longer, they're wild and funky, and they're totally me. so that's my journey. and that's leaving out all the crazy amazing spiritual journey they've taken me on so far.

I had to dig out the pic, but this was me after my 'dread lady' who got sacked shortly after :) put the wax in my hair, she told me to buy it and made me believe that I couldnt achieve dreads with caucasian hair *rolls eyes*

I'm gonna talk about my second set seeing as my first Dreadaster is documented in my Journal.

This was probably a few days after I got them in by a horribly racist Afro salon. Didnt ask what length I wanted and her assistant was hell bent on making me suffer throughout. I was told to come back once a month for six months "for maintenance". I'd **** myself because they were like put wax on them once a week and I just couldn't be bothered and felt bad I wasnt keeping up with it. Glad to say I never went back for maintenance. I was getting my husband to do the maintenance. Then I found this site and realised I didn't need to wax them.

This is them at nearly three months:

This is them from a week ago at 10 months old

I started my dreadlocks two days ago with some backcombing.

I am not sure if what I have is even the start of dreads and I am wondering if they look "normal" for where they are at?? I am really worried they are going to get matted into a big ball.

I did my dreads with knotty boy dread wax...Way before I realized I could just neglect my hair and they would form (the reason I wanted dread in the first place... less maintenance) Anyhoo...
They were a waxy mess there for a while... and then I started tightening my roots with the corchet method... ugh... but I have managed to maintain my love of my sweet babies...and even though they are NOT perfect...they are no longer waxy and gross feeling.

this is my 2nd set.. they were backcombed and waxed to fuck and back.. the pic is them at 8 weeks old

bone-straightness isnt good. oh no it isnt. and the huge gap on the back of my scalp.. dodgy

dunno how 'old' they were when i took this one

probably had just been washed, hence the fluffyness. some of the wax had come out, but not a huge amount

for the record id just say wax is bad, no argument.
backcombing isnt bad, but it isnt great - it helps to get things started and the way you want them (sections and thickness etc)
