Loving the pics.. Some beautiful heads out there.
    Here's my contribution...

The day they were born. Back combed, Waxed to fook! How some o my friends say they looked better then I don't know...

Once they were done I was obsessed with palm rolling, blunting the tips etc.
Thank god, well infact you guys that I got out of that.

Now I am de waxing, washing with my own shampoo and not giving a toss how they look (I like them)

    Aye ...
I'm not even going stick up the ones where you can see the wax.. If anyone wants them as an educational tool or as an example if someone wants crappy looking dreads you are more than welcome to have them!!

    Cheers SE.
Even my whole mindset has changed since coming on these forums..
    You guys saved me.
I have been spreading the No wax message!

people just think oh cool hes got dreads hes gotta be cool ..they compliment ya no matter how gross it looks simply for having the balls to dread
also some like that whole punk rock liberty spike thing
and you well u liked em cause u felt like u asccomplished something, took a big step towards dreads evebn if it wass a scrwewed up step it was something u accomplished and could say look i got dreads (sorta)
all of which really has nothing to do with how they look just that u took a step towards ddreads regardless of how misguided that step was

i hope this dont sound condencending, well only a lil for effect but i think salotta why ppl go for insta dreads is so they canm go skipping down the street with that oh look at me i got dreads heehee attitude and hacve others respond with ogh look at him hes got dreadsthey go to great lengths to bipass that "look at his messy hair is he trying to dread or something?" stage
they'll do anything just to have some results to be proud of right away even if its screws them in the long run
i think alot of it has to do with not wanting to apear a mess when not all will recogbnize its a mess with a purlosed
so trtying to force neatness into a chaotic process they believe in all the lies about perfcet neat dreads instantly if u just glue em together

the end result being people who bipass the temoorary mess of early natural in favor of the permenant mess of sticky candles

    Got it in one SE..
For me they weren't dreads and wouldnt of been for a very long time.
I now understand that if i had continued the way I thought correct they'd probably never truly be dreads..
Now that my hair is somewhat more 'normal' , a few defined bits, curls, etc I am a lot happier and have had a fair few comments from folk saying they like it...
My Mother who has always been supportive of whatever decisions I make in life really liks my hair now :D

    Rock on.

I shall always spread the word of no wax! A friend of the family is growing his hair out and shall be going to back comb route but knows not to use wax already :D

Despite thinking I had researched the subject well, I started my dreads with the full-on Dread Head HQ dreading kit approach. It took me 10 weeks to realise I should stop waxing. In the first couple of weeks my dreads seemed to have great potential...they had been backcombed very well (sorry if that's a contradiction of terms to some of you ;) ) and what I think could have been very good progress was delayed and set back a lot. I know many of you don't approve of "making" dreadlocks the faster way, but a major factor in my choice to have them was practicality, and just kinda getting rid of my hair in a way without shaving if off, so hanging around for many many months waiting for it to do its thing wouldn't have made me too happy. I do like the amount of personality that grows into truly natural dreads though :)

Anyway, I've kept a diary and blog of my dreads since last summer. I was sure I'd just be waffling into cyberspace, but now my site is getting way more traffic than I expected, with many people returning for advice. I'm gonna update my links section and say that this forum is the first place anyone should look before going to the DHHQ and KB sites.

I feel I kinda have a responsibility now to make sure I'm really saying the right things. Yesterday I spent a LOT of time writing this post on waxing/not waxing, including my own pics to back up the argument. I'd be really grateful if any of you guys could take a glance through it, maybe leave some comments, just to generally help back it up and stop people making this waxy mistake that many of us do.

    Here's the link:
    http://dreadblog.amykristiansen.net/archives/667

It's a bit of a long post, but I really wanted to set out a clear argument that would explain exactly what's wrong with wax and hopefully help people to make the right choice.

I hope you don't mind me linking my own site here...feels a bit...ya know :(
