I think that saying long hair is distracting is bullshit.

Dreads however, I don't see how it's distracting but I can understand they might not want it.

    Yeah. I wouldn't either.

Basically, their thing with dreadlocks is that there's a passage in the bible saying that no man should let a comb enter his hair, or that scissors should cut it, etc.

    Uhh *Runs to find it*

They shall not make bald patches on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts on their body.

There a couple of "christian" denominations that believe that as well, with woman at least... Not sure if they actually abide by it any more these days.

'hip hair styles' is a vague description. I'm assuming that's what the handbook actually said. That phrase is open to interpretation.

Claiming that dreads are unnatural doesn't make any sense, since dreads form naturally. I'm not sure if your school handbook said anything about unnatural hair style being against the rules. I think only Ramona was using that description in this thread. Unnatural color could be argued more effectively by the school than 'hip style'.

Sadhus in India have dreads because they don't do anything to their hair so it naturally goes like that.

    Shiva had dreads.

I went through this issue at an elementary school. I argued successfully against every point that the school was trying to make against my hair style. It turned out that they would repeatedly move the goal posts and start another claim after failing each of their attempts. The claims went from distracting to radical to unnatural to unhygienic and so on.

They threatened to expel me but never did. That school was losing enrollment and revenue anyway (not surprisingly), so I think they didn't want to lose any more.

Supreme Court says that they can make you do almost anything as long as it is not against your religion,

Maybe she should find a god and get a religion?

Show us a picture of you with dreads.

Than it can be determined if it is worth the fight.

dreads are completely natural with the right types of hair. they gross on people who dont have the right type of hair for it (most white people). if i dont blow dry my hair after getting it wet, my hair will immediately clump together and form perfect dreads within a few days no effort involved.

I think personality has a ton to do with how dreads fit someone as well as their physical appearance and hair type.

My old public school suspended people for having dreads

If they didn't take 'em out, or if they didn't leave, they probably would've been expelled

No unnatural hair colour, no dreads, no mowhawks, no shaved heads, probably no mullets
