The thing with the internet is that people will interpret shit the way they want, even if it's completely opposite from as it was intended. So why should I give a fuck if people think I am an arrogant prick? They don't know me. Those on these forums who have known me for a while don't get offended by the things I say, because they know the things I say are not said with malicious intent. If you interpret it that way, well, boo fucking hoo. Perhaps the problem lies with you -- not me.

For the record, I don't think I am better than anyone. And yeah, sometimes I do sound frustrated, and that frustration is genuine, but in no way is it coming from a conceited place. Not at all.

Auto technician, welding, and custom fabrication. The main source of my income is driveability and electrical diagnosis and repair. There is an ungodly amount of shit that goes into new cars, so if you are good it pays well. It's not worth getting into though. I wish I never had a lot of the time.

I've spent $60k on tools since age 18, and still pay $60-80 a week on new stuff. It's neverending because they are always engineering new systems on cars.

My body hurts all the time, it's stressful as hell, you breathe in and come in contact with harmful chemicals, you get hurt.

But I do still love it. I come in the morning when I want, crank up some punk rock and go to town. If you have a legitimate love for machines and fixing things it might be worth it, I just usually advise against it because it's very hard work.

 

sorry to hear about the bad parts. there might be some kind of breathing filter that you could wear.

There are, I have respirators. But in practice only wear them when I'm doing serious grinding or sanding. OSHA comes by all shops routinely to inspect.

You CAN wear a mask more than most people do, I'm pretty sure there's small ones that would help. And things like grease and dirty oil, that are REALLY bad for you but get in tiny bits one everything and poison you for a long time even when you're in a totally different environment, can be mostly avoided with those doctor type gloves.

I say this with a nose full of acetylene soot, and cutting fluid and shavings on my pants that I wiped just because I'm a lazy fuck. And probably still lots on my hands, and in turn, my face, mouth, nose, food I eat, dishes..... But still, if it's your business, you could really live a lot longer if you take some precautions that I, as an amateur tinkerer, might not take....
