    you know it makes me realise I have no real sense of the racial mix in the US and it really wasn't important to me...americans are americans...however it was really obvious that the people at the superdome and other places were in the majority black and this seems to have been put forward as not being representative of that part of the US....is that true or not....and why does it matter anyhow? Seems to me that there were a lot of people from a whole lot of places as well as New Orleans that have ended up stuck in a bad situation....

    NO, it doesn't. The reason is that the US has spent BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars on Homeland Security, which is in charge of disasters like this. That is their mission.

    They should have in place plans to evacuate all citizens, especially those who don't have their own transport!

    But you see, nothing has really changed in America since the days of civil rights marches and Johnson's Great Society. There's a lot of rhetoric and a lot of money lining rich people's pockets, but no plan to help the poor people of America.

    No, it's "YOUR OWN YOUR OWN", just like the police told the Brits. Go out into the streets and risk the armed gangs, the toxic water, and whatever else God has wrought along with Bush's help.

    That's the same message they've been giving poor black people since I was a kid. No helping hands anymore. No head start, no welfare, no more unemployment, no handouts.

    So what if the fucking levee breaks? Only a bunch o' po niggas gonna die!

    That's the thinking of right-wing America (the assholes running things), much to America's shame!

    I'm not raising a point.....i'm pointing out exactly what was stated in the link Skip provided.

    The rescuers made a decision based on race.

    or maybe it's individuals pointing out racist actions where it actually occurs.....even if it does leave a bitter taste.

    so agreed new orleans is 67% black,, so your theory would imply that the 33% that isnt black were deemed expendable because they chose to live with the "poor niggas"??

    There were a lot of black people down there.. and i am sure a great many share the views of some of 'the goverment not caring about black people'.. This might have been true decades ago, but imho a slight inept and conveniant POV now. Yeah there were lots of people stuck in the same predicament of all races .. this should not be discussed in a thread about the fascist police targeting/discriminating black peole

    The truth is now revealed for the world to see.

    How America failed it's own people, chasing a right wing dream in far off lands.

    Ignoring the needs of the people. Robbing them of the much vaunted security. Security denied until they were shamed into action.

    Now we will see whether these victims will be provided for, or swept under the carpet once the public's generosity wanes.

    Let's see if America has the guts to change it's priorities, or continue it's greedy agenda of war and imperialism.

    I sure hope Americans soon sicken of Bush and his fucking cadre of self-centered pigs.

    the thread was about rescuers taking americans above british people not black people...and it sorta turned into a thread about who was higher on the rescue list...I really have no idea apart from what the media presents here and that was generally that all people there were stuck regardless of country, race or creed...suppose that gets back to the point of so many other threads made about being stuck for help in a country that is amongst one of the most privelaged amongst us....seems it probaly makes no difference where you are if the shit hits the fan. The worry is if it makes a difference who you are.

    You believed a link between Iraq & 9/11

    You believed a link between Iraq and Terrorism

    Those 7,000 soldiers coming in to New Orleans today. Where were they supposed to go? Iraq!

    These are active duty troops, who are NOT supposed to be deployed in the cities (except when students protest), and they are coming, ONE WEEK LATE, because the Louisiana & Mississippi National Guard are in Iraq.

    But there's no connection.

    And the fact that Bush took money that could've been used on the levees and instead put it in Iraq, has no connection either.

    You're so fuckin' full of hot air Matthew.

    I just might have to do a rant about you one day.

    The American Government if not the nation seem to have appeared in a very bad light. All the images are very negative for the american culture thet I've seen.

    Please correct my error, I heard, Bush is scrapping Inheritance Tax while at the same time reducing the available benefits to the poor ?

    is it right?? i dunno,, seems like to me no matter what mother nature dolls out ya outta be glad ya survived an move on..

    Why should ya expect anythin more??

    You chose to stay,, no matter who ya was,, new orleans has been a bullseye for 300 years,, it just never happenned till now..

    plenty folks willin to help here in the states,, just a damn shame there is such a beaurocracy,, in this country that the folks who wanna help are forced to go thru govermental or red cross,salvation army,etc type ways..

    Its a amazing thing,, we as americans will be of new blood(thru there brains)or collapssed after this one,,

    either way,, me an mine will be the same.. :)

    Yes they've also reduced the benefits to Veterans who are fighting their wars. They've done so many things that benefit only the rich, often at the expense of the poor.

    This is called Social Darwinism, the survival of the richest. It has never been more obvious than down in New Orleans this past week.

    This policy is in effect whenever the Republicans are in power, and today they yield far more power than ever.

    You can also see how this policy works, when you realize that few if any of the young rich republicans who so vocally support Bush & the war in Iraq refuse to volunteer to fight for that war, which in their eyes is so important to protecting America.

    It's poor people with few opportunities who end up on the killing fields of Iraq.

    So when you see the poor black people in New Orleans suffering before the news cameras of the world, realize this suffering is ongoing, and only revealed when the shit hits the fan, and the whole world is watching.
